reset anti-lock light

Hi Gang

New here but not to auto repairs. I have the old anti lock light on the upper left side of the dash staying on. I just acquired the car and the person I bought it from says the light has been on for some time but does not notice anything wrong with the brakes. Is there a way to reset this light, and if so and I do reset it and it comes back on what would be the normal starting point to fix it permanently.

Thanks...........Gunny

i had the same problem, first of all the brakes will work ok with light on, only the anti-lock portion will not work, so you probably won't notice anything. what i read up on is that the dealer has to scan the antilock module to see what it is faulting. you mighthave a bad sensor. what i did was to ohm out all sensors to see if any are "open". i also cleaned all connectors going to sensors, antilock motor and antilock module. i did this over time and eventually my light went out and stayed out. also try pulling fuse under dash and check and check 50 amp fuse under hood in fuse block. hope this helps .

Hi Dave

Thanks for the information. I guess I will have to give that a shot. Just a matter of elimination it looks like. I imagine the sensors are easy to get too. The brakes do seem to work ok. It might even be as simple as a unplugged wire. I might even see if my OTC scanner will check that problem.

Thanks again, and take care...........Gunny

Unless you have a Ford Rotunda scan tool, you can only reset the abs light by repairing the problem then drive the car at 25mph or better for a few minutes this will reset the light.

Well that idea is shot in the butt. I will do the process of elimination then.

I guess that your otc scanner doesn't pull abs codes, I'm not sure how interested in tools you are, but if you don't mind spending a small amount on a tool that works great on pre obd2 fords take a look at ebay item # 260032625613 it will pull abs codes on you 94 grand marquis along with engine codes. For abs codes you will need to connect to the abs connector on the passenger side inner fender. Just throwing parts at your car might cost you more then buying the tool.

Good luck.

Hi Reekor

Thanks for the tip, I appreciate it. I looked at the auction and it looks like some thing I might be interested in. A person could have a fortune tied up in the scanning stuff. I just wish they would have some sort of a unified system, so you would not have to have so many different pieces to do the same things to different makes.

It does not look like the very best equipment, but I think it will do for the use I will give it.

Thanks.............Gunny

if you're looking for the connectors for the wheel sensors, the rear are in the trunk, above the spare tire shelf where the back of the rear seat is, the fronts are under the hood along the frame rail, the left side front connector may be under the air filter box by the abs motor.

You might try disconnecting the battery and wait a few minutes for it to reset. This worked on my chevy truck.

They are out there if you are will to spend $2000+ The Launch X-431 does ABS, air bag on most makes of cars along with imports. The OTC Genisys is a nice tool also if you get the fully loaded package. Snap-on has a couple nice models also but their prices are off the deep end. My autoxray 6000 works fine on OBD2 systems, But there is no abs or airbag coverage and when it comes to pre obd ford it isn't worth talking about other then the lack of mecs coverage.

Hi

I have not had enough time to really check it out, but I looked for some of the harness, and could not find either of the front ones. One thing I did find is a unplugged 2 wire terminal, coming off a big wrapped up harness, coming up the left side of the motor, and it was just sitting there around where the 2 front spark plugs are, on the left side of the motor. (looking at it) I know they have these for other accessories some times, but this one is not capped up, like I have seen a bunch of them. Do you think the harness to the front sensor is unplugged.? But I cannot find any place it would plug into. I cant make out what color the wires are. The person I got the car from said the light had been on for a long time. And the length of the wire coming off the harness is just about 6" long.

Thanks.............Gunny
