2005 trailblazer LS 4x4, 3.42 gears, open rear. I Did this drain/fill at 22Kmi. Found it very cool that the rear diff cover gasket is a reusable metal/rubber gasket! The cover bolts come out hard due to thread locker used by American Axle. Check how ugly the old oil looks compared to the new M1 75w-90.

amazing post joel.
nice photos! is it nessecary to remove the diff cover to change it besides the fact you want to clean the magnet? i thought there was a drain plug on the bottom of the diff.

i will humble myself and say that when i bought my TB i headed to ... oh god here it goes *gulp* Jiffy Lube to have the transfer case and diff lubes changed so it was done and i didnt need to think about it again :)

wish i would have done it myself now though :/

Some of the earlier TB's had rear diff drain plugs. GM left them out later on. The inside of the cover and magnet was coated in back gunk. Quite a bit of black metallic paste on the magnet. Mineral spirits cleaned it right up. All Iffy lubes are not bad, but I would definately check the level and condition of the oil in the fr/rear diffs.

Well, i think i paniced Joel, after thinking about it i went down and got the recipt from the glove and looked at the type of fluid used, it was a code and said dexIII *gasp* i called the Iffy Lube and confirmed my fear , its dex3 that was used in the service of the Xfer case and M1 7590 for the diffs.

franticly looked at the chilton i have for this truck and saw GM auto trackII is called out for this.

The towtruck will be here at 8:00AM tomorrow to bring it to chevy and JL says they wiill pay the repair bill if its needed.

this might explain the reason the Xfer case dropped out of 2H into N at 70 MPH about 4 months ago for no reason at all a day after using it to pull my 79' bronco out of a ditch .*fingers crossed*

Oh crap.. yeah, TB's need GM's auto-trak II in the transfer case. Not sure if you will have damage, but a new T-case compliments of JL would be nice!:naughty:

That is why you cannot go to JL type places for fluid changes that are product specific.

sadly the worst part is they HAVE the fluid but never checked if it took it.

So, the saga continues. end result JL payed me back for the Xfercase fluid warrenteed the Xfercase against pre-mature wear for 75,000 miles from now and payed all the fees associated with the screw up on thier part,

paying JL to change diff and Xfer case fluid ....180.00

paying to replace undies when fluid was dex III .... 13.00

Having JL pay for all the repairs and a 75K warrantee ... priceless.
