Couple questions

First I'll start with my buddy's car. He has a 95 Grand Prix. We've been trying to get it sounding decent with what he has and we're having some trouble. First of all the rear 6x9s have 4 wires running to them. But coming off the HU it's got two wires. There are plugs that hold the 4 wires, so the end going to the speakers had red and black (assuming positive & negative) so basically on the stock speakers it's got a red and black on two sides, so what he's done so far is splice the two red together and the two black together. And then hooked those up to his new Volfenhag 6x9s (got them free at an Expo with a Pioneer HU). They claim to be 800W max 6x9s. So, is this the correct wiring or what, because I've never seen anything hooked up like that before. He did add in some extra wire to make the connection a little easier. But at certain levels these speakers get pretty nasty sounding. I'm assuming that they're clipping and he needs an amp. The HU only puts out around 50W max. The front speakers sound pretty good through the whole range, but of course as with most GM cars the front speakers lack a lot of low range sound but belt out the highs. Fronts are stock.

it sounds like he has the wiring system in back for the upgraded system. if he has 4 wires on each side its because theres suppose to be a 6x9 and a 6.5" speaker on each side. im not sure why the 6.5 was removed. but thats the cause for the extra 2 wires. the reason your getting the bad sound is because there should be a crossover built in somwhere on the inside of the door panels and it limits power to the 6.5" so that ti dont blow and then keeps more power pumping to the 6x9...make sense. so basicaly your getting the max power sound from the 6.5" wires but still trying to power the 6x9's

try taking off one black and one red wire crank it up see if it still sounds that way. if it does take off the other 2 and put the first 2 back on. that should solve the problem...

if this isnt clear lemmi know ill re-explain

Thanks a ton, I really appreciate your help. I'll have to let him know what to do with his car. That's crazy how they managed to have them set up like that. Thanks again. Wish you'd come along sooner.
