hi...

I own a 1996 toyota corolla 1.6l 4cylinder and was wondering what would be the best engine to put in it (as an upgrade with significant increase in horsepower). What engines do you guys recommend that are compatible with my car, and that are much more powerful than my previous engine without spending TOO much money. I would really appreciate any feedback and comments... Thanks for the support.

Are you planning on doing the swap yourself? Because the price will be steep otherwise. And are you planning on buying a brand new engine?

i have a really good mechanic that would give me good pirce on the labour...and i dont plan on a new engine, very likely a used one :)

96 is not a very fun year with emission being tied into the picture most states won't let you put an obd1 engine in a obd2 car and of course some of the better engines that will fit in the prizm (corolla) with some good gains are obd1... i believe the 3sgte was made in 96? i could be wrong but i've also heard it is a lot of fun modifing it into a prizm (corolla)...

hmm, do you guys think i should just upgrade my current engine instead of performing an engine swap? what would be the most hp i can pull out of this rolla without Nos? what kind of upgrades do you guys suggest?

lol Nos. You could always build and turbo it. That would probably be about the same price as getting a better engine in there. Maybe more depending on the parts. If you dont have emissions than swapping motors is probably the best idea.

best thing would probally to bore out the cylinders better pistons and other internals to stregthen it up then like above said turbo kit, won't get a lot more power 200 at best, and the engine probally won't last long after with that much boost...i'd say find an gas pincher and sell it off and buy something else even another corolla before 96 then you could go crazy with the mr2 engines...

can a automatic-manual transmission swap be done on my car?
how much would that cost apprx?

hey jpucar anythings possible if you do it yourself (only if you have the resources!) it wouldn't be badly priced maybe around $500-$600 with a used tranny if you get it done with a garage you need to find a garage and get a quote from them every garage is different but def well over $1000...

but anyways back to the topic of engine swapping I think I might have a solution just started researching into it but just throwing it out there it doesn't look decently to big but I haven't checked mounting yet or anything but a toyota camry v-6 model 1MZ-FE puts out around 200 horsepower on the stock engine and has superchargers available! this engine is also the first obd2 compliant engine... like I said I just started looking into it it's a pretty small v-6 too only 3.0l I'll put some more info up here as I get it, and if anyone already knows this won't work throw it up here...

that's perfect...200hp is a very good start :D . please post more info on it if you get it...thanks

but about the transmission swap...i live in vancouver and the resources here are just horrible...i called 5 different shops today, and they either said it was impossible to do, or it would set me back $5000!!!!! i was so angry that none of these guys knew what they were talking about, are you sure that i can pull this off for about $1000??

jawberger
09-22-2006, 01:41 PM
on the tranny i said it could be $1000 depends on the shop and how much you spend on the tranny and other parts needed, you can get a tranny off ebay for like $350 after shipping... and I know from looking one of the biggest transmission dealers on ebay is in the vancouver area so you might be able to save more money there by picking it up...also look up geo prizms of the same year their identical in the engine and tranny department, even look for a parts car with a fairly good tranny, that would be the cheapest probally cause then you would know you had all the parts you needed to get the job done...

jawberger

and on the engine side not much luck in finding the engine, cheapest I found was $1800 for engine only no tranny and most came with an automatic also... seems like a pretty rare engine to come by...

i found a corolla dx engine for 750$cad, is this a resonable price, should i try and bargain with this guy ?

jawberger
09-22-2006, 10:15 PM
a corolla dx had a 1.8l 7afe engine which will get you about 10 more hp then the 1.6l 4afe which isn't really worth it in my mind...and $750 for a 7afe?!?!?! is it brand new?

jpucar
09-22-2006, 10:19 PM
haha, no its not brand new, its got 90,000km on it...i take it its too expensive???

jpucar

also , do you guys know where i can find some reverse glo gauges...i've been looking everywhere but i cant seem to find it for my 96...it doesnt have the rpm gauge :(

jawberger
09-23-2006, 08:15 PM
hey jpucar i got some reverse gauges with no tach for the corolla i'll sell them to you for like $20 including shipping but i'm at college right now i'll be goin home veterans day weekend so if you want em i can ship them out then...try to put them on my prizm but the little leds didn't line up with the prizms cluster

jpucar

A tuner magazine that I picked up the other day replaced (well this was an 86 and im sure there is a huge diff. between that and a 96) the original engine with a Lexus ls400 engine (1UZFE). The total swap I think was around 8k but im not sure if the included the axles(sp?) and transmission that you would need to change to handle the power increase.

BTW im new not to the forum... well yes, I posted a few years back in the skyline forum lost interest and my password and came back to see what the huff was about with the 86' corolla being a nice drift car since my friends are now begging me to buy one. But the introduction is still waiting my name is Ross im 17 I am currently in high school graduating this year. (woo hoo) I have a 4.5 GPA and wish to be a physics major at a nice university, but anywho I just wanted to add my :2cents: =D have fun.

yo ross, so do you know if i can get a tach guage on my 96 ?? or where i can get an engine dress-up kit?

jawberger
09-26-2006, 07:58 PM
do you have the 1.8l or 1.6l because the 1.8l had the connection right in the dash for the tach cluster the 1.6l you can do you just have to wire up the tach on the gauge yourself... dressup kits I haven't seen any just be like everyone else and buy the engine paint and do it yourself... I think duplicolor makes a nice engine painting kit

You can always get custom wire mesh hoses made and the like for dressing your engine buy new headers and before you start the engine rub a bit of alcohol on them it will burn off (evaporate kids don't freak:eek7:) and that will leave it shiny. You can also make your own chrome piping I did it with my ram air intake with my ls400 because it's a show car. As parts go I would check vivid here is a list of corolla parts (I just searched it, it won't nothing special har har) http://www.vividracing.com/catalog/advanced_search_result.php?keywords=corolla

As for you tach I am pretty sure the the manual version of your car (don't bet me on this because 1. I am not sure there is one for your car, 2. You would probably have to find a junkyard or something to find it which im still unsure of) has a tach cluster (The speedodmeter and other parts oil etc. etc.) that will fit your car as well.

jawberger
09-27-2006, 08:26 PM
hey mi89325 that oil relocation kit is pretty cool except for the part where you can only use greddy oil filters probally charge and arm and a leg for those but who knows...

jawberger

jawberger

i'm sure i'll get people complaining but it still needs to be said:

on your painting adventure please don't over do it and make it look like "rice" no huge aluminum wings and lots of paint done slopply, people say that muscle car people are rude when talking trash about ricers but as I see it ricers bring it on themselves... pretty much all I'm saying is don't go overboard on the engine repainting and interior, I say just keep it clean looking with some rims and a lowering kit, and tint....

jpucar
10-02-2006, 12:24 AM
yup. i completley agree...mine is gonna look very clean. i was just wondering can you paint the heat shield or is that not recommended? also, the wiring and hoses, can i paint those or should i just get them painted?

jpucar
10-02-2006, 12:31 AM
speaking of rims....i really really want some black rims on my corolla... something with alot of spokes..any suggestions out there?? on a budget :(

jpucar
10-02-2006, 02:39 AM
and whats the deal with these speedchips i've been seeing so much? do they actually increase your horsepower?? are there any side-effects or what??

jawberger
10-02-2006, 08:35 PM
"speedchips" the less then $30 don't work...it is a simple resistor that costs 10 cents...
