Installing air conditioning pump

I need to install a new ( it's reconditioned) air conditioning pump on a 1997 Plymouth Voyager V-6 3.0 ltr. I was told you need to put a lubricant into the pump. My question is what kind of lubricant and how much? Is it then ready for installation and then filled with the refrigerant 134?

:2cents: I've had some experience with A/C systems but, I'm far from an expert. Based on what I've seen done, done myself, and read you should change the receiver/drier along with the compressor. You should then take it somewhere where they have the equipment to draw a vacuum on the system to get any moisture out. They will then service the system with R134 and the correct amount of oil and dye before the compressor is even turned on.

BTW - it's Ester oil but, I don't know how much you need for your purpose.

just did ac condensor on my 01 and it used PAG oil,I got it at the dealer, and mine took 5oz with only front air, rear air is more, but as RIP mentioned you will need a new drier and if the pump went bad (bearings) the lines will be contaminated and need to be flushed first.Somethings I leave to the pros(dont like to, but have to) and a recharge is one of them.

Now that I've read a bit more on it PAG oil is recommended for most A/Cs that have had nothing but R134 in them. Seems they want you to use Ester oil on a conversion from R12 to R134. Be aware also there are different viscocities of PAG oil. No idea which you need. Recommend you call the compressor manufacturer to get the correct info.

A 1997 Caravan takes PAG 46 46 is a (viscosity rating) The entire system takes 13 oz if you have front and rear air or 9 oz. if you have front air only.
Not all of the oil is in the compressor...So if you didn't have any leaks..you should be able to drain the oil out of the old compressor and measure it..be sure to turn the clutch and force as much oil out as you can, and replace only that amount..maybe one oz more.

You do need to change the filter dryer. You do need to completely evacuate the system (pump it to a vacuum). You should use new O-rings on the lines where they connect to the compressor. You need to add the correct amount of R-134 to the sytem 46 oz if front and rear air, 34 oz if front air only.

Physically removing and mounting the compressor is fairly easy. All these other steps and the equipment required to do it is the hard part. If you haven't done this before you need to read up on it. If you don't get the moisture out of the system you'll have very poor performance and a quick failure on your new compressor.
