2000 GTP Problems - Advice

I just have a few problems on my GTP... First off, the TCS light remains on all of the time and I cannot turn it off. I believe I have checked all of the fuses, unless some are hiding somewhere or called something other than TCC or TCS? (underhood and by glove box). I am expecting this may require the dealer, but I was just wondering if anyone knew of this issue and a solution... Next, I have never had an auto dimming mirror, I can't tell if mine is working... The green light is on the mirror, but when I disengage and reingage it at night, I don't notice a difference. Is it something I should notice, or is the change real subtle? The light from other vehicles does bother me a little. Also, the EXT temp on the climate control is always off by 10-20 degrees... I see it rapidly climb as the car initially warms up and it seems to be linked to the temp somewhere near the engine heat... Ever had this issue? Do you know where the sensor is located? Sorry to bug you will all of these questions. I noticed that the climate control illumination is dim on the driver side and dark on the passenger side control. Can I change out some light bulbs for this prob? Finally, I see that the right side of my trip/boost screen is a little dark on the right side. Is this again a light bulb? A couple more ?s... can you change the battery on the Keyless FOB (Don't have one yet), what are the programming steps (sorry, still searching forums), and what is the programmable auto door locks all about? How do you program those?

Thanks to anyone that can shed some light on these issues. I really appreciate your support.

Regards,
Dan

Welcome to AF.

On the TCS problem try removing the ABS fuse and see what it does. It may reset the EBCM/TC module located under the dash. TCC is torque convertor clutch so that is not your problem.

There is an ambient temp sensor located in front of the radiator area but it does sound flaky.

On climate control illumination there are led/mini lamps that can be replaced but the job is tedious and requires soldering.

On the DIC you have 5 lamps. Some sound burnt out. Use Sylvania mini-lamp #24. The DIC must be removed to replace them.

Yes, you can replace the battery on the remote. It will require resync and programming. We have old posts that cover RKE programming.

The auto door lock feature is programmable. Procedure is in the owner's manual. If you do not have one I can send you the 2000 owner's manual on PDF file.

Thanks a lot for the help. I will try those things. I do not have an owner's manual with this vehicle (Just got it on Sat) I will pm you with my email. I would really appreciate that info. Thanks again!

No problem. As soon as I get it I'll send the file.

On the removing ABS fuse. Remove fuse with ignition off. Then take ignition to on for a few seconds. Then ignition off. Re-insert fuse and then check status of TCS light. Fuse is located in the engine compartment fuse box by the battery. Back of the lid has a fuse/relay map. Good luck.

UPDATE:

I took the DIC apart and replaced the light bulb. Problem fixed. I also took apart the climate control and de-soldered the four illumination light bulbs. I am currently in search of those light bulbs or something close (possibly LED). I will be posting pics of this project, if anyone is interested, when I am done. I took the vehicle to the dealer today for the TCS. I did try the ABS fuse idea with no luck. Thank you for the advice. Looks like the hubs may be ok, but the TCM or PCM (I can't remember, and I'm tired) may be bad, so the dealer is going to replace that. Luckily, this is still under the 80,000 mile, 8 year warranty :iceslolan . Otherwise I'm sure it would be big $$. Other things, I am having them verify if the Auto Dimming Mirror works and the incorrect EXT temp setup. So far, I am seeing evidence that the vehicle may have been zapped by something over 12v. Maybe a 24v jump start from a tow truck, I don't know... I say this because both fog lamps were popped, along with all four illumination lights for the climate control, and the light bulb in the DIC... IF the ADM is bad, along with this computer module, this may help further prove this thought. Again, I'll keep you up to date. Thanks for the help and helpful tips! :)

P.S. One more question... When I click the performance shift button, I see it light up on the DIC, but not on the instrument cluster. Is it supposed to be on the instrument cluster? I could see the letters Perf Shift in the cluster with the right angle of light. Thanks!

Dan

Thanks for the feedback. Well, it sounds like you are making progress. Possible something in the electrical system got surged out.

The Perf Shift at the IP Cluster is no longer used for your year GTP. It goes back circa 97 - 98 since the DIC on those models did not have the Performance Shift indicator.

I used to have the lamp specs on the climate control lighting but can't find it. You may be able to find something compatible at Radio Shack. Good luck.

Well got the bum for the day...

According to the dealer, Looks like the TCS problem is linked to the Electronic Brake Traction Control Module or EBTCM. It is a $1400 part, which is by no means in my budget ever. Looks like I am out of the running... what a bummer to such a great car. Does anyone have one of these used? I am going to check the local junk yards... Man this is sad. Thanks for the help.

Yeah that is a real bummer. The module is expensive. Go for the salvage yard or try places like EBay. Ed Morad out of Ohio who is a Grand Prix buff sells used parts there. If the part is not listed send him an email on his listings. Good luck.

Thanks, I sent in my parts request to Ed. Also I found a module about 2 hours away for $150. Even with gas, I'd be saving $1300. I've built engines before, so an install of this should not be a problem. Or at least I won't let it be. The money I 'll hopefully be saving will motivate me :grinyes: ... Again, I'll keep you in the loop. Thanks so much for your continued support. It's good to know we are here for each other :sunglasse .

I did a search of the forums to try to find the procedure to reset error codes in the PCM. I tried one - "With your car off, Turn your igniton switch to the "on" position (don't start the car), then tap on the gas pedal 3 times, and you will see the lights on the dash flash 3 times. Now, it should be reset." - But had no luck. After I replace this part, the dealer said that the TCS error will still be in the PCM, which is understood. They said to bring it back, but I was wondering if anyone knew the steps to reset the PCM for errors only, without losing the data? This would help save some bucks. Thanks!

There are different ways but none are guaranteed to work. The best tool is a scanner. The PCM memory is a NVRAM (KAM) so it does not lose memory on a PCM reset. DTCs are cleared to include history and pending.

You can try the battery disconnects after you replace the module.

If all else fails then you may need reset done by a GM Tech II. Such as certain DTCs from ABS and body control/chassis.

UPDATE:

I fixed the ACC lighting problem by substituting some smaller, 50mW bulbs form Radio Shack and soldered them into the circuit board. Problem solved. Replaced the Temp sensor, problem was not resolved. The temp was now reading 30 degrees below the outside temp. found out that it is defective, so getting replaced. I finally was able to verify that my AD mirror was functional. Also replaced the entire ABS Pump and Traction control module and had to bleed the brakes. I can now turn the TCS on or off, but the light still remained on, so I took it to the dealer to have the code cleared and found out that the Salvage yard gave me one from a GT and not a GTP. They had the one ready for a GTP, but for some reason had to take it out of a GT. One guy told me it would be ready to pick up, but when I got there they said they still had to take it out and put me behind 2 hours. That's because it was two different guys, and the other messed up, not knowing the one I needed was ready to roll on the shelf. Anyways, I will be taking the module/ABS pump out again tonight and then going to get it exchanged for the correct one. Luckily the salvage yard may throw $$ off the price for gas. :) I will let you know the overall outcome of my project when it is completed. Thanks.

FINAL UPDATE:

Success! Everything is now functioning properly. The salvage yard gave me the correct TCS module/ABS pump. They also gave me 52 bucks back too for the confusion, which is impressive for a salvage yard! Very nice group of guys - Jantz Yard 4 Automotive, INC. in Kenosha, WI - http://www.yard4.com/aboutus.htm . I just left the negative off from the battery the whole time I did the replacement of the unit (Including bleeding of brakes), and when I started the vehicle up, voila! No TCS light anymore. I also tested in some wet grass :) I hope to post some pictures of my project sometime soon for you guys. Again thanks for the help! Great car!

Here are the pictures of the ligh bulb replacement project on the DIC and the illumination lights for the Dual Auto Climate Control. Hopefully these links work out...
The first picture outlines the various light bulb postions behind the DIC the squares indicated dummy postions to put spare light bulbs. Could possibly be used for something else in other models. The lines indicate the TCS and Low Trac lights. And the circles indicate the illumination lights behind the DIC LCD.

These next pictures involve the Dual Auto CC and where the illumination light bulbs are located. Note in these pics, I had already desoldered the light bulbs.

And this final pic decribes the two light bulbs that I had to replace. Sorry I did not get a pic of the new light bulb... That was a late night. Also sorry for the glare on the right.

I'll try to get a pic of the ABS pump/traction control module and of my car. If anyone has any questions about these procedures, I'll be happy to help. Enjoy!
