GM and Ford hooking up

Just caught a short clip on the Internet news about GM and Ford joining together because of both of their failing sales. So are we going to have some kind of a mutant Ford Chevy Blazer Excursion, oh by the way GM is talking to Nissan too. So is it going to have some Xterra in there also. Or is this just the same BS the news prints when they don't have anything else to keep us amused.:pimp:

I'd love to see GM and Ford merge if it made sense and was profitable. I'd love to see those GM and Ford employees keep their jobs, feel secure in their retirement benefits, and continue taking pride in their jobs, work, and livelihood.

I'd love to see our auto-worker's jobs be enviable, coveted, and desireable, and most importantly, STABLE, sustainable, and free of fear of cutbacks, downsizing, etc.

I'd love to see the American auto industry continue to be profitable and positioned in a leadership role ...

GM lost 10.5 Billion in 2005. Ford has kicked Bill Ford out after 5 years and hired some guy from Boeing I think. GM is closing 12 plants cutting back 34,400 employees 1/3 the work force with early retirement and buyouts trying to stay above water. Why do you think they are losing so much money when they are selling so many cars and they are so many cars on the road?

GM is losing money because it has been a leading auto manufacturer for many decades, with many employees. It is the payout of retirement benefits for three and four generations of workers that is causing them to not be profitable. Younger companies don't have this problem. I've read (but can't remember) stastistic on how many $$ per vehicle sold goes to GM's retirees. I remember the $$ per vehicle being staggeringly more than other companies because of the many generations now retired.

That makes a lot of sense. I never looked on it that way. But what I think would help the auto companies the most would be to get out of the cars in the price range that most people paid for their first house and produce a nice low priced good on gas that don't look like a metal box with four wheels and two seats in them. With gas the way it is and the way it is getting it would help both us and the companies out. Oh but what does the car dealers and companies do the minute the gas prices go up any thing that gets over 26 or 27 miles to a gallon shoots up in price and any thing below oh well.
