I just replaced the camshaft synchronizer assy on my 2001 Taurus V-6 Flex Fuel doing my best to visually align the new with the old. How do I correctly set the camshaft position sensor and what are the spcifications for it?
Also, I have a flex fuel engine, what do the terms Vulcan and DuraTech refer to.
Thanks,
Jim

Ford has a special tool to do this procedure.

What's with the synchro? Variable valve timing or something for the flex fuel? :dunno:

It's for the ignition system, so the PCM knows which cylinder is on TDC at which time. Since these cars have distributorless ignition, they need some cylinder reference point. At start up, the PCM fires two cylinders simultaneously until it can determine accurately the camshaft position via the CPS/synchronizer.

"what do the terms Vulcan and DuraTech refer to.'
In the Taurus, Duratech 24 Valves & dual overhead cams, Vulcan old style 12 Valve with pushrods and one cam.
Lots of engines named Duratech: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ford_Duratec_engine

Right, understood and known, just when I saw "synchronizer" I immediately thought like a manual trans snchro bringing 2 gears to the same speed before engagement. Never heard a cam sensor called that before.
