Pulling Cable

Hello Everyone,

I have a 2000 Ford Ranger (V4) and I'm trying to put in a new gas filter. The Haynes manual says to pull the cable below the fuel cutoff switch (which on my truck is below my glove compartment). This will allow me to then crank the engine and drain the fuel out.

However, when I yank on this cable, it seems really stuck and will not come out. I don't want to break anything so I'm just thinking of letting some of the gas spill out when I change the filter. Has anyone been successful in pulling out this cable?

BTW: I changed the PCV this weekend. It took me a long time to find it. The Haynes manual was more confusing then it was a help. Anyways, if your looking for it, its directly behind (and about 6 inches below) the air compressor on the oil separator.

Thanks for your help.

Best Regards,
Stan

I am not certain on that, but if you do just let a little bit out, make sure to relieve the pressure in the fuel system before taking fuel lines apart :).

Psychopete,
How do you relieve the pressure? My Haynes manual says to:
1.) Put the truck on a slope with the front end higher.
2.) Take off the gas cap.
3.) Disconnect the connector to the inertia shut off value (Which I can't seem to get off).
o Then after disconnecting the cable, try to start the engine until all the gas is out of the system.

Is there another way to relieve the pressure?

Thanks,
Stan

That's fairly new, I've never been under the hood of one. However, there should be schrader valve for testing the fuel pressure on the fuel rail. This will relieve the pressure, but you'll still have fuel in the lines.

I would image that has a fuel pump relay. You could also unhook the fuel pump relay (same effect of unplugging interita switch) and turn the motor over.
