On this year ford the pickup in the distributor fires the coil. Put a 12v test light on the coil neg. When trying to start the light should blink. If it doesn't blink replace the pickup in the distributor. Otherwise the module on the side of the distributor is usually the problem. Normally they shut down when hot and restart in appx 1 hr. Very seldom does a coil go bad. You should have a computer ground around the computer. The relay for the eec system is around the drivers side a pack of relays are located on the pickup.
Advance auto does free module tests. I have a tester but sometimes use a air gun to heat up the module as they test good cold and fail hot.

One tank, one pump same problem. The wiring harness on 88-91 F150s were made of cotton. They suck. Check your fusible links from the solenoid, really check them. The wiring gives out between the pump and the relay as well. Also, don't laugh, the light dimmer switch could be causing the problem, check for heat damage or scorching around the Ignition wire that connects to both the dimmer switch and the light switch. On my 84 t-b I went to a few junk yards and found the best looking harness I could. I removed the one from my car and put on a ping pong table. I used a terminal tool and removed bad wires and replaced them. I only had to make 2 splices. I had it done by supper time saturday. I had the harness before I started. When hunting a harness some were good except cut by the yard and a lot were bad. I'd hoped they corrected the problem. Their must be something wrong in the mfg. process.
No easy way to correct bad wiring.
