Bogging down while shifting to 2nd gear

I have a 94 Prelude si h23a1. When I first bought the car it would bog down while shifting to 2nd at hard excelleration (around 6500 rpm, more or less.). After many upgrades the bogging down stopped and it started spinning tires when I hit 2nd gear. I don't know which upgrad fixed it, but oh well. I thought that this was just my car that did that, but I guess not. While at the drag strip I had noticed stock preludes, V-tec and non V-tec doing the same thing. I have a friend with an accord with a h22 conversion that does the same thing. If anyone knows what exactly causes this, please post reply so that I will know what to tell anyone when they ask me. People ask me why mine doesn't do it. I don't know what to tell them. I don't know which upgrade fixed it. Any help would be great. Thanx,
LILWHITELUDE

I don't really mean to be an a*hole, but its because your tires are too sticky(not likely), your clutch is going out (possible), or you can't drive your car. When I got my Lude it had the h23a1 in it and I could spin the SH!T out of 2nd. At the track with my h22a and an OEM clutch, I'm spinning 3rd and sometimes 4th. Too much traction/not enough power causes the bogging, unless your engine is just acting like a slut

that could be it, but slipping a clutch wouldnt cause bogging. think about it. when the clutch spins the engine revs up faster than the transmission, not bogs down slower.

I did think about it. When I test drove my Prelude i was able to get 2nd. This was my first stick car, and I learned to drive on it and the clutch was already somewhat worn. Then within another 3 weeks I COULD NOT spin 2nd gear for my life (not even in the rain), and the pedal was coming 80% out before it was grabbing. I'm not an internet dickhead, I like to help people out, because someone's always been nice enough to help me out. I really wouldn't say that unless it actually happened to me, which it did. When I was trying to spin 2nd it would be just like an automatic car, and little jolt from letting the clutch out, and then waiting for more power.

Sorry for the long post

sounds like a slipping clutch...

when you say bogging down do you mean the engine revs and the car doesnt go anywhere or the engine just wont rev

This bogging...are you sure its not the rev limiter??? do u let off the gas when ur at 6500 about to shift into 2nd on the H23? :nono:

My engine was just fine at that time,(4yrs ago) Ive driven it over 30,000 very hard miles since the bogging problem. Although now my engine is not fine. The clutch was fine then, It could have been the tires. I have gone through many sets since then. My car, in which had a bogging problem now spins the shit out of 2nd and never barks 3rd. Honestly your doing about 60-70+mph when you hit 3rd, kinda hard to spin at those speeds. At least in my car. oh, I shift around 65-6800 rpm.
The add ons are cai/ex, port polish and light shaving of head<<Not a good idea on a bottem end with many miles (Over 200psi on compression check while doing wet test on each cylinder). MSD Ignition/coil. Im sure there is something else, I just don't remember.
Obviously it couldn't be the clutch because then it would rev up and not bog down. I never really thought about the tires, but that makes since. If they are to sticky the engine can't overpower them, therefore the tires bog the engine. I don't remember the tires I had back then, but they were really soft and wore out within 10,000 miles.
I really do appreciate all of the input from yall, It has helped me. Now I have an idea of what to look for when it comes up again.

Thanx everyone.. lilwhitelude

when I got my h22a swap, my boys put a 4 puck clutch in it, and I spun 4th one time when it was dry out (in rain it was almost dangerous to stomp it). but 3rd was just as easy as 2nd. After that tore up my JDM flywheel, i went back with one that the shop said was a little stronger than OEM which is probably bs. When my USDM cluster worked, I was skipping from 65-70 from 2nd to 3rd with the h23 tranny.

I may not have ever seen the real potential of my engine if people are spinning 3rd. My car always felt pretty peppy, but I've never driven it with a fresh engine. That will soon change. I just aquired another block to build.

I don't know about everyone spinning 3rd, but I can do it with the h23 tranny. Good luck with your build and let us know how it goes.

oh yeh, I forgot to mention this. Im getting cheap when it comes to tires nowdays. I've gone through so many that I don't want to spend much more money on them anymore. The last set of tires that I had on my car were eagle GTs. Those spun like a sun of a bitch. Believe it or not, Im running a very cheap set of douglas gt's. They feel real soft. My car doesn't spin 2nd as much with them, but they hook up well. Most of the time(when its hot outside) it just barks 2nd and takes the f++k off. The acceleration feels good, but I have to get them balanced every 2 months. They do not hold balance much at all. But they handle awesome. So anyone on a low budget like I am at the time(until after engine is finished) and doesn't mind the balancing issue, give them a try.
If anyone has any good tricks or advise on anything that I should do while building the bottom end, feel free to say so now. I can build the hell out of an engine, but Im more used to V8s and V6s. I have mainly built engines for other people in which there is no worry of cost. I need low budget ideas that will help me make this engine good for 100,000 miles or so and still be quick..
Thanx anyone, lilwhitelude

You are still yet to mention what mods you have on your car??? Low budget, and engine building don't exactly belong in the same sentence. Sorry :nono:

My mods were up a few post ^. MSD box and coil, Head(port/polish) cai/ 2 1/2 inch pipes, Catco converter, coilovers(Skunk),strut tower brace, and a few other things that Im sure I've forgotten about.
My engine is on a limited budget, I do plan on spending a good chunk of change on it. What I do not have money for is Cams and such. Im going to try to do this for under $1500 with the work being done by mostly me and the machine shop.
