'89' Lxi tranny Fluid

I've got an '89' Lxi, automatic with 145K mi. and I when I checked the tranney fluid, it was a brown color. I don't have a problem with shifting but I was always told that a brown color fluid was bad. It's probably has the original fluid in it. Should I have it seviced or not even worry about it?

Thanks, JIM

Replace it.
It was due 10+ years ago!

I'd replace what you can drain...don't do a full fluid exchange, that's asking for trouble...

Jim,
I had that car (89 LXi and it was bulletproof).:grinyes: I also have a good friend who rebuilds trannys for a job. That vintage auto Hondas are weird, in that there is no filter to change. However, here's the trick. Drain it completely, wipe the particles off the magnetic plug, replace plug and refill with correct auto trans fluid. Drive it for 500mi, and repeat. Drive it another 1000mi, and drain. This time, refill with Honda ATF fluid. The "Refill and Drain" process works because the new fluid picks up contaminants over a few weeks, and then you drain them out.:smokin: A couple of times is insurance for a long lasting auto tranny.
BTW, I did this at 160,000 mi, and it was going strong when I sold it at 210,000mi:disappoin
