Open the rear doors or tailgate. Look for 2 black rubber plugs just inside the pillar. Remove those plugs and remove the screws holding the light assy in place. Then the assy will rotate out at the rear. The weather stripping will hold it in place so use caution when trying to pry the assy loose..........Steve

Steve:
Thank you most kindly. I'm a little sheepish I didn't figure this out myself, so thanks again.

OK, smooth a silk. Thank you, Steve, yet again.
It occurs to me that -- quite by accident -- I had the right tool: a long screw driver that was both magnetized and had a flashlight built in. It might have been a pain without this.
There is no gasket covering the screw holes & the screws are a bit rusty. Is there supposed to be a gasket?
The dealer gave me only two bulbs; I used what appeared to be a good bulb from the old assembly. It all checks out, so here's hoping.
Thanks again for this great resourse.

You're very welcome and glad I was able to help you. My '98 sub has the rubber plugs so I assume they should be there if only to fill the holes........Steve
