Hi, Recently I just bought a Daewoo Lanos and this is my first time to own a vehicle. I am just wondering is Lanos is a car that has a lot of small problems after a while? and since daewoo is moving out of the country, does anyone have update on who is going to carry the warranties and fixing parts? Coz i have heard people with bad comments on it saying that in a long run, it will give me problems. Please advice. THank you.

Daewoo's are not known for their high quality. While this might seem bad, you have to realize that the quality level of today's cars is MUCH higher than it was only 5, 10, 20 years ago. Daewoo's shouldn't break down on you, and actual problems should be quite minor.

With the Daewoo brand ending in the US, getting work on your car will be a little tougher than just a year ago. Hopefully, the Daewoo dealer around you is not factory owned (some are). With any luck, the local dealer group that owns the local Daewoo shop will continue to service your car in the hope that one day you'll trade up to another brand they carry and you will tell your friends that you were treated well.

There are some dealerships that don't see this and will abandon you. I hope, for your sake, you find a good dealer.

News: Daewoo won't sell 2003 models in the U.S., but existing
owners can count on parts and service for the next few years.
That's the word from U.S. importer Daewoo Motor America, which
is winding down operations.

Daewoo was forced to leave the U.S. market due to the rescue
of its bankrupt South Korean parent, Daewoo Motor Co. Last
spring, General Motors agreed to pay a fire-sale $251 million
for a controlling 42-percent interest in a new, smaller Daewoo
vehicle company with a different name. Suzuki, one of GM's
Japanese affiliates, soon agreed to take a 19-percent stake.
Daewoo's creditors hold the rest. But GM didn't want all of
Daewoo, and that included Daewoo Motor America and its
dealers. Facing the prospect of having no new goods to sell
after 2002, DMA declared bankruptcy last May. U.S. dealers
hurried to clear inventories, then closed or shifted to other
franchises. GM has promised the "new Daewoo" will supply parts
and service for cars already on U.S. roads, plus limited
support for warranty claims, but that's it.

Even so, Daewoo may get a second chance in America. According
to a DMA official who spoke with Consumer Guide in August,
new-design Daewoos may be sold as Chevrolets or Suzukis as
early as July 2003. GM hadn't confirmed anything at this
writing, but the company has announced plans to sell
Chevrolet-badged Daewoos in Mexico, and could do likewise in
the U.S. Our source says U.S. Chevy dealers would mostly
likely want Daewoo's redesigned Leganza sedan, previewed in
2001 with a new 2.5-liter inline 6-cyl engine and styling much
like that of the Mitsubishi Galant. Suzuki, meantime, is said
to be eying a redesigned Lanos subcompact and a new-generation
Nubira compact to supplement its mainstay SUVs.

Thank you for all your replies. I just checked out the consumer's guide website. It doesn't sound like Lanos has good power and safety (the main concern). Mine is manual and I just learned it or still in the process of learning it. So is it a good idea to resale it and find sth else??
I got it from a dealership, and it says 'as it' so there's no warranties from that dealership. But does that mean that i can't get parts from the daewoo dealership ( I didn't get my daewoo from daewoo dealership).

Please update me on the news. thank you again.
