Instrument Cluster Removal

After living with a few quirks the last half dozen years, decided to get it all over with at once before giving the car to one of my kids. Trying to remove the instrument cluster to fix the trip meter, got stuck when finding the string that attaches the auto gear shifter to the gear indicator in the cluster. Looks like I would have to take the column apart to release the string. Anybody do this already and can give me a clue? Its a 94 3.8 TSport.

No! You do not have to take the column apart! The shift indicator cable is attached with a clip to the bowl at the trans control lever. Just remove the clip and the the instrument cluster is all free to be removed from the car.
