95 Corsica won't run

I have a 95 corsica that won't run. At first it ran great then it slowly started bogging down and losing power. It would eventually have a surge of power and run right again. It gradually got worse and smelled like gas really bad. Then a few weeks ago it just died and wouldn't start. A few hours later it started again and did ok for a few minutes and died again. During this we changed the plugs,wires,and had the coil pack tested at autozone and it was good. Since it died a friend worked on it he changed various things including the computer under the dash nothing seems to work and we are out of ideas.Does anyone know what could be causing this or anything else we could try. I am a mother of 3 and going to college full time. I can't afford a new car and can't really afford to pay much trying to fix everything that isn't wrong with this car. thank you in advance. I forgot to mention that the car was only firing on two cylinders and we couldn't figure out why that was.

Has a fuel pressure test been performed? Test both the running and standing pressure (after shutdown) to see if pressure reaches correct levels than remains after the engien is shut off. Rapid loss of pressure on shutdown can indicate leakage of injectors, the fuel pressure regulator, or a failing pump check valve.

Could you include what engine you have in your car, it makes a BIG difference.

I haven't had that checked. I know hardly anything about cars. The people that have worked on it keep telling me it isn't anything to do with my fuel filter, pump or injectors. I was told by a guy at autozone it was a possibility but never checked it out would that cause the problem of it being completely dead? Now it won't even start.

Ok I am not sure exactly I am pretty much car stupid. I do know it is a 4 cyc is that what u mean by that?

I would say the ignition module is the culprit.

Yes I agree it sounds like the ignition module has failed. I have seen this several times on my family's and friends GM engines. The module sits underneath the coils and you have to remove the coils and module as one assy. Should be three bolts holding it on. Might glance at a Haynes manual, or go ahead and buy one. Autozone has a do it yourself section on their web site, might look at it. It is flat and has 2-3 sets of wires running to it. Take it off and have Advance /Autozone or NAPA check it. They can test it for you. Runs about 80-90 bucks as a rule.
