Transmission makes funny noises

Just wondering if anyone would have any idea what could be wrong with my transmission. Whenever I start slowing down with the clutch in, the transmission makes a winding down noise. Also with it in neutral and the clutch out, it makes a light grinding noise. Any ideas?

it could be your throw out bearing but its just a guess

It's probably not anything to worry about for now, do you leave your hand on the shifter when it's in gear?

I'm having a little trouble with yur explanation but I'll give it a try. If it's noisy when you depress the clutch and if the sound changes when you just barely touch the clutch, it's probably the throwout bearing.

With the clutch depressed and it's noisy and no noise with it released an no noise when you just touch it, it's probably the pilot bearing.

If it makes a racket sitting in neutral with your foot off the clutch, and gets quiet with the clutch depressed, it's probably a bearing in the transmission.

If i'm understanding your noise right, you got the same problem my trans had. NOT a throw-out bearing. It's a main bearing inside the trans. You must replace it. I had replaced main bearings, 2nd/3rd gear sets w/ synchros & did the clutch w/ new throw-out bearing & pressure plate, light-weight flywheel. New axles too. I had a Honda Tech(19 yrs exp) do all the work. Had the trans done in 45 min, then the rest was another 45 mins or so, $50 cash & a case of beer.

I replaced 2nd & 3rd cause they were starting to grind @ high RPM shifts.


If it is your bearing IT WILL get louder.

Alright, thanks everyone. I'm going to try to wait and see how long it will last right now, don't have the money to fix it. Going to see if it will last until I can get an engine swap done, but that is still going to be a few years so I might have to get a rebuild kit or something for it.

Actually it might just be normal. The sound it makes with the clutch in slowing down is the clutch matching what the engine rpm will be once you let it out.
