Current Fuel Prices (September 2006)

I was just wondering what gas prices were across the U.S. and in Europe and everywhere else as well. Since the last time I filled up it has dropped roughly 60 cents a gallon and I fill up on average every two weeks. Word going around here is that it's suppose to be back right around 2 bucks a gallon in the Thanksgiving - Christmas area.
Just wondering what everyone else has heard.

Filled up last week in Inverness, Scotland for .98p/Litre. (for those that are doing the math, that's about 7.25 a gallon)

The .98 per litre is in pounds, so almost 1 pound per litre, 3.7L per gallon so about 3.62 pounds per gallon. Since it's about $2 per pound right now, double that for 7.25. But keep in mind that pay in the UK is figured in pounds.

You gotta remember they pay way more for gas in Europe than we do and they don't bitch and moan about it cuz thats the way its always been and their economy is set up such that paying $100 a tank doesn't leave them starving for the rest of the week... most people at least

I don't know. The Thruway stations adopted a new policy a couple years back where they change their prices once a week, and before they do that they survey gas stations around them then average the price out and that's what they charge. This actually worked out great here in Syracuse last year after Hurricane Katrina when prices were skyrocketing everyday. The Thruway stations sometimes were 0.20 cents cheaper or more on occasion, and our local news did a story on everybody getting on the exit before the service center just to buy gas. There were lines in Syracuse and Chittenango for a couple of miles or so waiting for gas.
What I don't understand is that a news story yesterday said that gas prices had dropped 0.60 cents in the last 3 weeks and in our area the prices have only decreased about 0.16. I paid $2.79 a gallon last Tuesday at a local station that lowers prices about 5 to 7 cents a gallon on Tuesdays. Now the average price in the area is around what I paid then.
Another sad thing is how we've been "conditioned" to these higher prices over the last year or two, and we "cheer" when the price goes down to a level that is still way higher than say 3 years ago. It's what the oil companies had hoped for. I came across a receipt from March 2001 where I paid just 0.79 cents a a gallon for gas, which didn't last very long. I think that's when the oil companies really started to raise prices on a regular basis, especially after 9/11.

Nope. It was for a few short days in mid March. Prices in our area had dipped below $1 a gallon and the price I paid was at a Sunoco station that was located across the road from another Sunoco station. These 2 stores were constantly at a price war always trying to "one up" each other. They have a reputation in our area for some of the cheapest prices on gas . Besides I usually put all my gas purchases on station credit cards, no "spare change " involved

IYou gotta remember they pay way more for gas in Europe.
No, we pay way more in tax. the fuel itself is of a fairly similar price. fuel is also more expensive here because we don't have our own oilfields and we need to import the raw crude oil.
London is about $6.84 per gallon. that seems cheapear than Scotland's price posted by fredjacksonsan, but it's not. as he did the work roughly. if you do his price accurately it would be $6.65 per gallon. (no offence meant, Fred.)
if you want to be realy extravagant you can buy 102Ron petrol from a handful of BP stations over here, it'll set you back a wallet-chrushing $14.58 per gallon.

No offense taken! But now I have to defend my math.
I used 3.7 litres per gallon, it's actually 1 US gallons = 3.7854118 liters. (http://www.google.com/search?q=convert+gallons+to+liters&start=0&ie=utf-8&oe=utf-8&client=firefox-a&rls=org.mozilla:en-US:official)
I just exchanged money both ways on my vacation, and the pound was at $2, give or take a cent/pence either way.
So @ .98 per litre, it takes 3.7854118 to make one gallon. So .98 x 3.7854118 = 3.7097 which is ~ 3.71 pounds per gallon. Multiply the 3.71 pounds by the $2 conversion, and... $7.42 per gallon.

I wonder who's genius idea that was :shakehead Just like when I see a Starbucks across the street from another Starbucks... WTF
Those 2 Sunocos have been there for years, and still are. I think one is a corporate owned station , and the other one might be a franchisee as it also is a garage and tire store with a convenience mart that sells Sunoco branded gasoline. The funny thing is there used to be a Mobil station on a third corner and that closed down about 4 0r 5 years ago. One would think if any of the 3 stations were to close, it would've been one of the Sunocos, but I think that Mobil was part of a region wide shutdown of Mobil stations that were under performing as a result of the merger between Mobil and Exxon. A bunch of those stations closed in our area.
As I stated in an earlier post, those low prices I paid back in '01 was for a few days during a week in March. Within a couple of weeks the price jumped about .20 cents and kept rising until it settled in the $1.30 range by summer of that year.

completely off topic but that's how franchise companies make a lot of their money.
i) they open a shop.
ii) if shop is good business, they offer the manager the chance to buy the franchise. (this brings in steady income for parent company in terms of rent, cost of supplies, % of profits etc)
iii) if shop continues to do well, open another one nearby, usually bigger and better to steal franchisee's customers
iv) franchisee fails to keep up profit margins and is forced to sell franchise back to parent company at lower figure than he paid for it.
rinse, repeat.

I talked to a friend of mine back in Chicago yesterday and she said gas was $2.63 there, still the most expensive I've heard of lately.
I checked a website for European gas prices & the Dutch pay the equivelant of around $7.25 per gallon of gasoline. Diesel is a bit cheaper though (as is in most of Europe).

Even with your high taxes, ( I doubt though Wisconsin will ever beat NY in the "high taxes" dept.:icon16: ) our average price is hovering around $2.75/gal today. Back in June, the state put a cap on the fuel tax at $2.00/gal, so no matter how high the price goes, we will only pay the state tax (4%) on the first $2. A month later, some counties, including ours, voted to cap their take on the taxes at $2 also, ( another 4% whoopee.) Now comes word from our county legislature that they are considering dropping the cap and reinstating the full tax because it is estimated our county alone will lose about $5 million dollars next year in revenues, and that would screw up the county budget. Mind you, the tax cap has only been in effect a little over 2 months. Instead of a cap on the tax, they are proposing a decrease in the property tax rate for county residents, saying that is a better plan.
When the state, and county caps took effect, most people complained that they didn't notice a decrease in the price they paid on a gallon of gas. In fact, a local Valero station raised it's price per gallon by .12 cents the day before the cap took effect. The next day they then lowered it only .04 cents.:uhoh:

Price of gas has gotten stable now to between $0.75-$0.80 per litre for regular. Can still pay up to $0.85/L at some places during the week, and as little as $0.70/L at others on during the evenings (Thursday nights are usually the cheapest).
So if 1 US gallon equals 3.785 litres, we're paying between $2.65 and $3.20 per gallon (Canadian). So we're really paying equivalent of between $2.36 and $2.85 USD per gallon.
Have no clue what super goes far as I haven't bought premium in almost a year, thankfully...
This is in the Toronto area BTW. I'm sure out west in Alberta the citizens are getting a free gas allowance every month. :grinno: The second biggest oil reserve on earth (according to present day refining techniques) is sitting in the sand up in northern Alberta. It's sad that we'll never see a price break - priority will be to export it at the best price. :disappoin
