i have a 94 4.3 automatic S10 Blazer. When its in Drive it has NO pickup whats so ever from a stop. It seems like it is starting in 2nd gear instead of first like it should because the FIRST time it shifts is around 50-55 mph! which i know 1st gear isn't that long lol. when im on a little bit of an incline in Drive it rolls backward a little bit before it starts moving forward (kinda like a standard would) it also seems like reverse doesn't grab well either, not as bad though. once it gets up to speed and shifts to second or third which ever not sure? it seems fine. Is my transmission bad?

I just went out and looked and smelled the transmission fluid.... It looked like new fluid. It was nice and red and clear also. but it had a burnt odor to it. Not horribly bad (not sure how bad horribly is? like knock your socks off or what?) i know this could probably be the cause of my problem, but could my problem be causing this? b/c i have driven it a few times (really short distances of about a mile or so).

Read this stuff in the FAQ section on transmissions:
http://www.automotiveforums.com/vbulletin/showthread.php?t=461182
There are solenoids for each shift and then the weak link, the Sun shell that takes out reverse, 2nd and 4th so a strange sensation to drive - broke one!

Will it manually go into first gear?

From a stop put it in 1,,,,then 2,,,then 3.

See if you can shift it manually.

I would be looking into the VSS.

Sounds like it is giving the wrong signal to the computer.

Also, any check engine lights?

Black97GST

no, there was a check engine light on, but i took off the neg. battery cable for a little bit and it went away after that.

Was the light on when these problems were occuring?

Please help!............ anyone???? i wanna get this fixed. So where is the VSS?

BlazerLT

If it is 2wd it is on the tailshaft of the tranny.

If it is a 4x4 it is on the rear tailshaft of the transfer case.

its 2wd......... sorry, lol im stupid. What is the tail shaft? and is the VSS hard to get to and or replace?

BlazerLT

The tail is the end of the transmission. Where the driveshaft attaches to the tranny.

ok thats what i thought, i was just making sure. So you think that is most likely the culprit? How hard it it to change? I tried searching but there is nothing.......

You need to get out of your computer chair and get out there and take a look.

lol that would require me moving..... j/p I'm gonna look at it tomorrow when i have time to. Between college, the woman and work i don't have time to do shit lol. Thats why im trying to get some opinions on stuff before i try to go out and fix it because i wanna fix it the first time b/c who knows when ill have time to next.

There is always time to work on your truck, saying you have no time when you dont have a family is just a cop out from you getting out there and learning something about your vehicle.

So drop the mouse, get on some work clothes and get your ass out under the truck and take a look under it.

And also go get a haynes or chilton's repair manual to help you with the repairs.

No really............... if you can find some time for me to work on it then i would be glad to...... but like i said, i have a full time job, college and a fiance. So i will look at it tomorrow because i don't have work or school for once.

Thanks for your help

ok, i just went out and pulled the VSS and one side was all gunked up??? at first it looked like metal shavings but when i rolled it in my finger it was just gunk no metal?? no clue what could cause that, but im suspecting the VSS for sure now. Im gonna go get one now and hopefully it will work!

BlazerLT

Just clean the gunk off and reinstall if you want and see if theta will fix it.

Make sure you reset the computer by pulling the negative battery terminal for a half an hour.
