Transmission filter change

I plan on changing the automatic transmission filter in my 1998 Dodge Durango with the 5.2 engine. The total oil capacity of the trans. is about 21 pints according to the manual and a Chiltons manual. However in the Chiltons manual it says that I will need about 3 pints to refill the trans. after I change the filter. I can't believe that only three pints of oil is going to come out when I remove the pan and let it drain. Comments please.

Old chilton is getting a little off base there.:shakehead
On a filter and pan drop add 3 qt and then start checking with dip stick engine running.
And if the heavy thick rubber reusable pan gasket reuse it.
Also use the correct mopar fluid the good book or dip stick calls for.
And there is a tsb out on the mopar transmissions where most are to be changed over from ATX+3 to the ATX+4 transmission fluid.

Thanks MT-2500 for the reply. I just removed the pan to see how much oil would come out. I got about 6 qts. Question on what type of oil I should buy. Should I buy that ATX+4 ? Will it be OK to mix with the ATX+3 that is still in the tranny ?

Cry TSB 21-004-04 transmission march 16 2004
Say to change transmission fluid over on that one Durango 98-03 from 7176/ATX+3 to ATX+4/9602 Transmission fluid.
It can be mixed from 7176/ATX+3 to ATX+4 No problem.
ATX+4 should be bought from from your Cry dealer.
Aftermarket has some out but beware on aftermarket.
The cry ATX+4 is a full synthetic Transmission.
I cange my personal T&C van over to it and can feel a big differance in improved shifting.
Good stuff. :grinyes:

MT-2500, you talk about ATX+3 and ATX+4, but do you mean ATF+3 and ATF+4 ? That is with an "F" instead of the "X" ?? I just bought 6 quarts of
ATF+4 at Advance Auto Parts made by Valveoline. I just re-read all the posts. I see that I made first mention on ATX+3, so you were probably just refering to what I mentioned ?

The ATX was a typo errow. Should be ATF
I would get the cry ATF+4 fluid From the dealer.
Aftermarket stuff may not be the true cry ATF+4
Just like the ATX+3 7176 fluid cry has a patent on it all.
And remember oem dealer parts only hut one time.
