There was a guy a couple of posts ago about an '06 that someone replied to him that you could just switch out the base mirror that has the on/off air bag warning and put in one of the temp compass mirror. Now will the same thing work on an '03 silverado or will I have to get some sensors put in for it. And if I can just switch them out could I get a mirror at a salvage yard or where could I get one? I would appreciate any help cause I have always wanted one of those mirrors but i thought it would be too much trouble to do and if i can just switch them out it would be great

You will need the sensors too. I did the same thing and the compass does work but the temp. displays 0C.

Alright Thanks I guess there goes that idea. Oh well I will have to spend my money on some other mod that I want to do.

but hey, at least the compass works in case you get lost. Its helped me several times. haha. Also, i got the one with the onstar buttons and it looks better than the original.

Ya thats true it would look better than the original. I'm trying to get all the stuff to make my truck look like one of the high end trucks because it is just a base model. I might just end up getting one anyways. Can yo get one at a scrap yard you think?

I got mine on ebay for $40 used, but since their inside their like new. Yeah my truck was too a base model. But right now i have everything that the v8's have including a v8 p/w, p/l/ p/mirrors. I just need seats and carpet!

Wouldn't it have been cheaper just to buy a better truck? I like your wheels, though; I want a set:biggrin:

Well when i got the truck in 2003 when they first came out the v8 cost about $30,000 plus tax, etc. Mine came out to $20,000. I've spent about $2,500 to make it into a v8. The only way you will know it was a base model is because of the seats and carpet, but i plan on changing those too. But other then that its all the same.

I did this a while ago on my '01. The wiring harness was tucked into the headliner. I don't have OnStar and there are a few different models of mirrors with different plugs. See if you have a plug up in the headliner and then just get the mirror thats right for that plug. You will need to get a temp sensor. They can be found cheap on ebay. The whole install took me about 40 minutes and cost me less than $75. I got lucky on ebay for a brand new mirror. My wife thought I was crazy but now she wants one for her car.

Ya i've done most of it to. I have the wheels p/l keyless entry. I dont have power windows yet. or cruise control. My next project is too put a V-8 in it. I should be getting a raide pretty good raise pretty soon so I am going to try to put a 6.0 in it. Then it will be a bad truck. My fiancee wont be happy about it but she said i could

:smooch: Great man, and go with the 6.0 cause now i regret getting a 5.3 instead of the 6.0. Its a great feeling seeing the before and after of the trucks and how much they have changed, all the time and money spent on them. My gf gets mad at me all them time cause i spend my money on my truck, rather then other important stuff! But i don't care, to me its all worth it haha

You regretted putting the 5.3 in it? the only problem is i have to find a way to get the money saved up. I think I should be able to in about 6 or 7 months hopefully. And that sounds just like my fiancee. But oh well a boy has to play with his toys.

Hi,
I just change my '07 (03-07 are the same, except the all new '07) to auto dim rear view mirror w/compass work, but not temp! I know I need the sensor, but where and how do I install them?
On my connection in the mirrow, there are 16 pins, but only 4 wires connected (other w/on star get 12 wires connect).
How do I connect the temp sensor from outside to the rear view mirror connection? let say if I found the temp sensor.

Thank you all!
I have found the temp sensor at a junk yeard for FREE, and install it in my 2007 Silverado (03-07 are the same, not new '07).
It's pin 5 (positive) & 6 (negative) in the plug.
It works great.

Not the whole wiring thing since it was cut off where the plug in the mirror, but I have the plug in; therefore, I just use a different wire to connect them.

Do you know if the wiring harness end for the sensor is built in like the mirror harness, tucked in the headliner? I am looking for the dark green/white and black/white wires and plug for my sensor up in the grill area for my 02 1500.

That I don't know since the wire was cut off outside of the truck, and I just remove the sensor and use it in my truck.
It has 2 wires green/white stripe (positive pin 5 in the plug) and black/white stripe (negative pin 6 in the plug), and that was how I connect them now in my truck.
Good luck and post back if you ever find them or how you connect for other to learn and save times 4 everyone later.

if your truck did not come with temp sensor you probably do not have extra harness in headliner nor the wires to go to temp sensor in front of radiator. the compass is built in the mirror itself. as far as temp sensor you will have to wire from sensor in front of radiator through rubber boot in firewall up through left frame up over headliner down to middle of mirror into pin 6 and pin 7 . i purchased temp/compass mirror on ebay for 60 dollars and bought temp sensor and plug for 45 dollars. i did alot of reading but had to do it myself to find out. not easy but not bad . two wires go from sensor to mirror . both wires are grey .when you plug in wires and comp and temp both do not come on switch wires around. order temp sensor and plug harness on gmpartsdirect.com temp sensor 15047946 and pigtail 12101856 good luck and enjoy!!!!!!!:runaround:
