Alarm/Lock Issue

My girlfriend has a 97 or 98 Jetta. It is enabled with an alarm/locking system that is only accesible by key( no remote/keyless entry). Recently, the drivers side door lock stopped working, as in the key no longer opens or locks the door. Yesterday, I locked the drivers side door from the outside with the key, which enabled the alarm....While I am able to open the lock and get in the car, the typical two turns to disable the alarm is now no longer working. I am unable to start the car, as the alarm kills the ignition. I am guessing, there is an electrical issue in the drivers side door, which is not registering the alarm shut off. What are my options? If I were to somehow disable the alarm could I then start it up? If I repair the passenger side door lock, is it likely to allow me to acces the shut off for the alarm? Do I need to replace something in the drivers side door...in order to disengage the alarm? Is there simply a way to get the car started so I can drive it to the dealership? Thanks for your help...

More than likely the harness in the door jamb is bad and is shorting out. You can't bypass the alarm because it's part of the BCM.
