Check fluid level. Should be while transmission is warm (drive a few miles) then either park or nuetral (check owner's manual) on level ground and check the fluid level while motor is running. Looks like oil dipstick except usually on passenger's side and near firewall leading to transmission.

If low, add 1/2 quart at a time and check until full. If this fixes it, you should have tranny flushed and new fluid put in. All automatics should be flushed and filled every 40-50,000 miles (depending on how you drive). If this doesn't fix it, check for wear in all the linkage points. Still no? Prepare to shell out some $$$. Take to a tranny shop and get an opinion. If it needs rebuilt, I'd buy a transmission from a junkyard seeing that you have 176,000 miles on the jeep. Just have it flushed and maybe a new or rebuilt torque converter installed before you put it in.
