Brake light switch

Hey, my fiancee's brake lights stopped working and found that it was the bls.

After installation ( as following Hanes manual), the brake lights now work, but don't engage until depressed farther than was before, a bit unnerving around town...

Am I doing something wrong, I've tried twice, same result. Can anyone give me some pointers????
