Two little things

Ok, got two things I need a little help/suggestion on. First, there's a squeak comin from the back passenger tire area, but it's not a brake squeak, it is consistent with the wheels turning but braking doesn't affect the noise whatsoever. And the number two is just a suggestion needed. I have a screen I need to mount, and I would like to mount it in the front passenger area. However, I have to mount it in a way that I can disconnect it and stow it in the glovebox while the car is parked (it is powered and receives picture from a DVD player under my seat, connected with an S-vid type cable) so as not to attract *attention* to my vehicle while it sits unattended. Any help on both these issues would be appreciated.

only advice i can give is dont rule out the brakes just cuz braking doesnt effect the noise

Yeah, I don't know if it's maybe just a new set that was put on before I bought it and they're squeakin some before the pads wear in, or if it may be a bearing that needs re-packed. It hasn't posed any problems or prompted a major eyebrow-raising, but I may put it on a lift and check it out this weekend.

If so then my suggestion would be to buy a bracket or have one made so that it can be attached to the dash and then when you want to take it out you can just remove it from the bracket and put it wherever you want.

Is it a braking squeak or a suspension squeak? If it does it when you goe over bumps or stuff like that then it's probly your shocks/struts.

djmoore85
09-12-2006, 06:58 PM
Well, I'm trying to avoid having to drill holes in the dash if I can. And it's not a shock/strut squeak, it's only when rolling, bumps and braking do not affect the pitch, rhythm, or speed. For the screen, I was thinking of trying to find a way to mount it without screws, but not have any eyesores when the screen is not mounted or in use.

Flip down screen inplace of your flip down mirrors....

Not a bad idea, I'll be doin this project friday, I'll look at that and see what all would involve.......

Use Velcro.

The velcro thought occured to me, I guess to make it blend I could try to find a color-match with the dash material. I may end up goin with that, but I'm still rackin my brain to see if I can come up with something that'll work out to my liking. For the flip out, there's one barrier: :2cents: :2cents: :2cents: Uncle Sam don't pay me much right now.

I thought of using velcro but then I remembered....

not have any eyesores when the screen is not mounted or in use.
I think strips of fuzzyness or roughness would fall into this catagory lol

lol very carefully, I want to go back to tennessee, speaking of that

djmoore85
09-13-2006, 04:27 PM
Yeah, that's my hang-up with velcro. And I am from the south, used duct tape my fair share of times on other vehicles. But, this one is a lot cleaner than a farm truck or Jeep, so that's why I am looking for a way to do it and keep the inside looking clean. I was thinking about what my99cavy suggested, if I can find a way to mount a bracket without screwin holes in the dash I may end up goin with that.

Take out the passenger air bag and make it flip up from where the airbag cover sits.

Take out the passenger air bag and make it flip up from where the airbag cover sits.Hey now theres an idea. You could make it look like its still a airbag until you flip a switch and then BAM a screen pops up. then when your done flip the switch again and it will just look like the stock airbag cover.

Cavalier2000

there you go lol

Alrighty, now here's a dumb question: this is the first vehicle I have owned with an airbag, how do I yank that bastard out?

my99cavy

Alrighty, now here's a dumb question: this is the first vehicle I have owned with an airbag, how do I yank that bastard out?Its actually not a dumb question. I'm really not sure how you would take it out either. I know before you go messing with it you better disconnect the battery. I would imagine that its held on there with some bolts but I'm really not sure.

If you are going the route with the monitor where the airbag use to be, are you going to do this on your own??

djmoore85
09-13-2006, 06:42 PM
Yeah, I don't see why not. Once the bag is out, from there it's just a matter of figuring out what I would use to mount the monitor on a setup that raises up and locks open, how to run the cable to it underneath the dash to plug into the bottom of monitor, and then test it all out. Will there be any kind of dummy light that pops on when I take that bag out, there's the issue of passing inspection when that time comes around..

Lances133
09-13-2006, 07:12 PM
Just take out the Airbag fuse on the side of the dash, or for extra safety, unhook the negative battery connection, then I'm assuming the passenger side airbag is like the driver's side one and is only held on by bolts/screws and plugged in, unscrew the bolts or screws and unplug it. I think if there isn't an airbag plugged in then the airbag light will come on, if that's the case just stick some tape behind the gauge face so the light doesn't show.
As for the monitor, if you don't want to go so technical, don't make it motorized, make it so you lift it up manually and then have two support "sticks" that just fall into place when it lifts up to hold it up/open.

djmoore85
09-13-2006, 07:15 PM
Oh yeah, I wasn't gonna do it motorized. Where would those bolts for the bag be located? I'm assuming that side of the dash-bottom will be coming out

Lances133
09-13-2006, 07:18 PM
I think you should be able to get at them just by removing the top/vinyl part of the dash.

djmoore85
09-13-2006, 09:13 PM
Cool cool. Any special tools needed or precautions so I don't destroy the dash? And are thses things pop-off or old fashioned and screwed to the car? Sorry, I can do engine work like nothing, but interior on newer cars is japanese to me.

Nevermind, I looked in the non-performance section and found classicrocjunkie's step-by-step. Doesn't seem that difficult, couple of small bolts and badabing badaboom. Well, if I run into any snags or yall have more suggestions I'll keep checking back.

You should be good to go man, good luck with it, I def. wanna see pics if it gets done tho.

Back to that squeaking problem...If you have plastic wheel covers I would put a $100 on it that they were the things making the squeaking noise regardless of breaking. Does it sound like a bird chirping behind you. Its a common problem on cavs and sunfires. If I had test drove my 03 cav in summer ie. windows down and not in the middle of winter I would of held out the two weeks for the upgraded rims. The guys at the dealership loved seeing me time and time again complaining that they sold me a squeaky car and never informed me of the problem (that the salesman knew about) before purchase. I think they replaced my wheel covers a total of 5 times and then I gave up and started turning the music up.

Lances133
09-14-2006, 03:41 PM
Oh yeah I remember having that same problem on my 2.2. It's the stock hub caps that don't snap on, they get set in place by the wheels lug nuts which don't tighten down the hub caps 100%, either take them off, turn up the radio as stated or buy after market hubbies adnd possibly shorter lug nuts.

djmoore85
09-14-2006, 05:16 PM
Well damn, I never would of thought of that being the cause at all. I appreciate the help, at least it'll be something cheap and quick to fix. Lol, I thought I was gonna be puttin the car on a lift and spending and afternoon looking over the back wheel/hub assembly to figure it out. And I will do my best to get pics posted when I put that screen in

Cavalier2000
09-14-2006, 05:41 PM
yep i remember the old hubbies, squeeked like a mother lol

Lances133

I thought the same thing, that something was wrong, then one day it hit me....the stock hubbies SUCK-A-BUNCH.

Alrighty, got the screen done, took a total from start to finish (with a beer break :iceslolan ) an hour and a half. had to resize pics by guess, sorry if yall can't see details.

Oh yea, I like it, got it worked out just how I wanted. Wasn't too difficult, I was ginger as hell with the airbag though. Held my breath damn near the whole time. But all in all, I like the way it turned out

Looks pretty damn sweet man!!! I dont know if you mentioned this already, but did you disconnect the airbag???

djmoore85
09-18-2006, 04:53 PM
Yeah, I was ginger as shit with that thing. It's sittin in the garage now, I guess whenever I get ready to sell the car I'll reinstall in. There's nothin fancy to it, you just lift that cover off and set the screen up, it's got a bracket/stand attached to the back that lets it sit up in that space, and a small piece of velcro on the side to keep it from sliding around while driving. The airbag light was tricky, it came down to just a little piece of tape to cover the small LED on the circuit board that lights it up. I goofed on the software that I used to resize the photos, it cut off the right side of the pics, but you can still see the general idea.

my99cavy
09-18-2006, 04:55 PM
Well it turned out very nice looking and it adds a nice custom touch to the car

djmoore85
09-19-2006, 05:35 AM
Definitely. My next step in the project will be to upgrade the stock speakers and add a small amount of bass. Then it's on to the fun stuff....... under-hood. I may go a little further with the screen set-up and set it in a bracket that can pop-up into place on it's own........ not decided yet on that

Cavalier2000
09-19-2006, 10:38 AM
you can do like a small shock or an actuator

my99cavy
09-19-2006, 11:20 AM
Yeah I would definatley try to make the screen be motorized, and I would use a acuator for that.

djmoore85
09-19-2006, 06:14 PM
Yea if I do it I'll definitely be using an actuator. The biggest challenge if I did that would be how to fit it in that little space and then the bracket fit in there to. It'll all come down to simply measuring and finding creative ways to utilize the space I have

my99cavy
09-19-2006, 06:59 PM
It'll all come down to simply measuring and finding creative ways to utilize the space I have.....Exactly

Cavalier2000

that why i said a little shock lol, then some sort of clip on the inside

my99cavy
09-20-2006, 10:03 AM
that why i said a little shock lol, then some sort of clip on the insideOhhhh I see what your saying, make it to where you push it down and it clips in and then when you push it again it unclips and pops up correct??
