Check Engine Light

My 1995 Jetta GL was running bad. One of the distributor's clips broke, therefore the cap was not holding correctly. I got a used distributor from another 95 Jetta and the car runs smoothly. By the way, new spark plug wires, recently new cap, and spark plugs. The check engine light is still on. I used the "mickey mouse" method and the light went out. Later on, I turned the car on and the check engine light came back on. Disgusted, I turned the light back out using pin #4 and #15 and left the car alone. I've read about how this method does not work on later 95 models and that OBDII or OBDI is not an option. Possibly a VAG-COM scanner...what's that???
Really confused...anytime I feel like I'm getting somewhere, a new problem arises.
Can anyone help out??
