Focus trans cables won't come off!

I have a 2001 Zetec w/manual trans (can't remember trans model, but it ends in "75"). I have to get the engine out of the car, and I can't get the shift cables loose. I was able to release the upper one from the stationary mounting point by twisting the round collars in opposite directions, but the end of the cable will not come off of the linkage (and I can't get the lower one to do anything). There is a spring-loaded (gray?) button on the linkage that I can push in, but the cable will not release. Am I doing this wrong? I have everything else disconnected, and the shift cables are the last thing preventing me from getting the engine and trans out of the car. HELP!!!!!
PS: Who's the idiot that designed the clearance available to get to those cables? You can't get your hands in there to save your life!
Thanks!
Steve
