What's up all?!:) I have an interview in Naples, Florida tomorrow and I was wondering if anyone had any tips, advice, or information to help me out with. The job will be in a juvenile detention center. Thanks in advance! Tonio

2 things:
1) Cover yours
2) Kick theirs

That should just about do it. I can't help you on anything in the FL, though. Good Luck! (But PA is better... and we've got LOTS of juvy centers here, too!)

If I can get throught to at least one "asshole" that society has given up on, then I've helped to make the world a better place for my kids one day. I'm a strong believer in Karma.:)

oooh i see. i just don't have the patience to deal with some of those people. if i worked in a juvenile detention centre i'd end up in a ...........juvenile detention centre....

i'd get the sense of accoumplistment, safe in the knowledge they couldn't do anymore harm. but i'd be facing life/death penalty for my "good deeds"

Well, having been around my fair share of so-called criminals and deviants, i can tell you that the young men in these centers respect people that respect them. COs (Correctional Officer) that try to establish authority by threats and yelling receive immediate resistance from the population. Of course it is necessary to maintain your place in the system as an authority figure, but the means by which you establish this place can dictate how the population reacts.

Being too friendly will get you walked all over and is probably worse than the dictator approach, but dictators can only be successful for so long before those being dictated to make their opinions known in one way or another. And by creating tension and anger amongst a group of men who can't (or at least know they shouldn't) take it out on you results in them taking it out on someone else. That cycle doesn't stop.

That just about sums it up!:grinyes: This has also been my personal experience so far. There are always gonna be at least 2 or 3 "extreme" cases that you'll encounter but you know there's nothing anyone can do until they get a true wake-up call.

The offer is pending!! I'm awaiting for paperwork to be Fed-Exed to me; only then will I believe it's real!:uhoh: I won't start until January so hopefully we can find a decent place to relocate to. I'll probably have a nice long commute but they upgraded their entry position offer to a senior counselor position based on my experience and how I did on the looooong phone interview. I know life won't be perfect but we'll be where we wish to live and I can always pass out on the beach when I'm good and drunk!:icon16: What's your news?!

Way to leave us hangin Tangie :shakehead What a cruel way to tease your internet community. So are you on your way to teaching again?

Well, my good news is even more complicated now than it was then (when I posted)...

I got a job offer with an online math tutoring company. Good salary and decent benefits... And of course, as soon as I confirm the details with this company, I get pulled out of class by my principal only to get "offered" a "position" that isn't yet open, but would keep me in teaching (instead of doing the online stuff) and would pay better with summers off. I hate making decisions. :(

When a woman is posting, putting "offered" and "position" in reference to an encounter with a boss sounds like you're gearing up to file a lawsuit. :uhoh:

Glad to hear you're back into the teaching groove though :bigthumb:

He better since that morning I had turned in my letter of resignation!!! ;)

I have decided that I am committed to the online place, and I don't even care about the school district... they've burned me 3 times already (not including this time) so I am so glad to be getting out of there. :) Still good news, but not "awesome" news.

Take the teaching job.

1. It pays just as well and counts towards your tenure.
2. Summers off.
3. It actually has a retirement plan.
4. You went to school to be a teacher, now go be one!

Oh, did I say all that out loud? By the way I presented a poll to all of the office staff at court today. They think you are nuts not to suck it up and take the teaching job. I was told that it is now my mission to make you wake up and do the right thing!
