So, I just had my first stoplight race yesterday. not that i never wanted to, just that i never had the chance to do one and never actually looked for one. So this cavy was driving all fast and crap and had a bigass fartcan, so i figured that this would be a pretty easy guy to get a race goin.
so after foolin around a bit we got to a red light, i look over, he revs, i rev, i'm not paying attention, the light turns green, he goes.... then i go. i pass him after shifting into third (~50mph) and got a half carlength before i shut down. we then kept on the street, after he caught up to me. then he punches it (~100) so i downshift into third and punch it. i past him after a few seconds then we let off and drove our separate ways.
now this might not seem impressive but it really surprised me. why you might ask, well that's because i drive a bone stock, fully loaded (power windows, ac, power steering, everything) 1992 accord. mind you it's manual and i don't know what his was but it really impressed me.
edit: I also heard a whistling from his intake, at first i thought that might be a turbocharger but after i beat him i figure it's probably just a cai or short ram,

Cavaliers are slower than civics.

^^ That is a very general statement. A Z24 w/ an Ecotec is far faster than a D16. However, a new Si and an older 2.2L Cavalier going, the Civic would more than likely have it. The point is, is that you can't just say Cavaliers are slower because in some cases they are and some they are not.
Glad to here you won though. Sounded like you had a good time.

it's an accord, not a civic. the cavalier was definitly newer than my car (i'm guessing somewhere around '96, that generation.)
And yeah, it was pretty fun, the best part was that he was your typical dumbass with rap blaring, fart can, etc. i just enjoyed putting him in his place. had i lost it wouldn't have been bad though, i drive a 1992 family car, it wasn't meant for racing.

Yes I know you have an accord. My statement was meant to explain why you shouldn't be surprised about beating it.
And yes, I can say cavalier's are slower than civics. Given equal trim levels (i.e. Si vs Z24) the civic is faster.

hell i wanna meet those two guys and shake their hands and ask them how they got their cars to go faster than 38 mph!

And would your opinions be biased on 1/4 times or does course times matter to you? Ex : when we went to the AutoX for the first time, my jetta was stock and would easily get beat by some of the cars there, but I managed to get 3rd in my class and pulled a 36 place overall out of 140something, would you consider my jetta fast based on that?

i think the "slow and fast car" theory is very biased because you compare to the cars you have owned/driven the quarter mile is one of the more non-biased ways to compare whats "fast" and whats "slow" my car runs a low-mid 16s so a car running low 15s is pretty quick to me, and a car in the 14s is fast. On the other hand, alot of you guys are running 14s and 13s stock...so 15s to you is slow

VR43000GT

It depends. Something can be fast in the 1/4 the 1/8 in about a bagillion different kinds of track times. A car may be slow off the line but screams on the highway. So many different ways to measure fast.

Well, yes and no.
I wouldn't say i'm biased towards 1/4mile times, but 1/4 mile is very important in measuring acceleration which is extremely important in any type of racing.
I said i think less than 13s is fast becuase once a car can reach that kind of acceleration, it will be very fast on a track.
To me, how fast I can drive my car is most important. Since there are millions of speed cameras, what is important to is how fast i can go through some country roads, hence I got a rally car.

See, I used to think this exact same thing, but then I cam to a realization...
How many times do you see people pulling Need For Speed Underground on the streets? I mean, lets be completely 100% honest, when was the last time you did a circut race on the streets, in traffic, ignoring stoplights and stuff like that? Yes, I know that touge or downhill drift or what the fuck ever is slowly starting to come into its own in certain areas of the US, and my understanding is that the new Need For Speed (Carbon) is gonna be following a general idea of downhill racing/drifting, but lets again be honest, when it comes to street racing, the only thing that really does matter is acceleration.
Now, when we all race on the street, which is the majority of our racing...we are doing it in a straight line, be it from a dig or a roll. Yes, every now and then someone here does do a race where they slowly pull away in a turn or something, but its on the highway with a bank.
So, for a street car that is to be raced on the street, I am biased towards 1/4 mile and acceleration times. However, I think what makes a street car fast on the street is different on the track. A car that is going to be raced on the track will be differently fast than a car raced on the street, and even then there is difference in track and street. For example, everyone here would agree that a Suzuki Hayabusa or Kawasaki ZX-14, when launched right, is gonna rip up a hell of a 1/4 mile. But how often do we hear of big single turbo cars just walking the shit outa a bike from a roll? Hell, some will out run the bikes from a dig. But those bikes and cars would get eaten alive around a road track, but on a straigh track, the car set up for twisties might not do as well. Its all relative. A Lotus Elise or Exige will tear the shit outa a road track or autoX course. But line it up next to a big single turbo Supra or 'Vette or a good number of other cars...and the Lotus will most likely get destroyed. Again, its really all relative.
See, I used to think this exact same thing, but then I cam to a realization...

Well, to be honest, the only reason that all that happens on the streets is light to light "racing" is because most of us don't have the balls or skills to do anything else.
The stop light grand prix is the simplest thing to do.

I don't know how much horsepower I'm pushing. But yeah, I have beat those cars... Some people just can't launch/shift... what have you. like the rx8... you have to wind those engines to the redline to make use of it's power. The same with the rsx. The Gt stang was pre...98 I think... not sure exactly what year. But I have beaten atleast 2 of those. But one of them had FIVE kids in it...:screwy: Besides they were probably all stock...
I have lost to similiar cars. I just forget to list them...lol I mean come on, honestly, who wants to brag about losing. I got spanked by a modded 02ish mustang GT... I got never got to race an rsx type s, but my friend had his out the track and it was running consistently a few tenths faster than me. we never got lined up tho.
Don't forget weight has alot to do with it. If I know I'm gonna race someone I will make sure everything unneccesary is out of the car.
I have already beaten people only to have them call me a liar and stuff because they thought I had either nitrous or a turbo or something!!!...lol I think it hilarious.
I don't race much nemore though.
On the other note... I thing anything in the 13's and maybe 14's is fast. 15's=decent, 16=average

That isnt entirely true, It has plenty of power on the lower end, though the numbers dont read it. And even if we are talking 1/4 times the rx-8 still does it in 14.5, best ive seen was 14.2, so it isnt a push over, on top of that would you know it the 8 you raced was a manual or an auto cause the difference between them is 5 cars.

yeah that's stock with an RX-8 and everyone who gets that time, or around it says that it is capable of more but they dont want to push the car since they arent made for drag. the 8's auto suffers cause they are different engines, the manual is a 6 ported engine and the auto is 4 ported and not to mention because of the torque converter the auto cant go to 10k rpms. The auto can only go to 8.5k I believe.
As for the mustangs, I do know that the Manual is significantly faster, I dont know why though, maybe you should ask a mustang guy.

The older model yes:smokin: but many people with '05's were able to do it after the 10k mark. And after that they seem to keep getting better, to a point of course.
also mine is an 06 and I havent seen one of those go through a 1/4 yet, someone mentioned that they can do close to a 14.5 it was along the lines of a 14.6xx and that was with less than 10k miles so I dont know, and I'm not willing to test it right now either.

all i want to say is that 14's aren't fast, and i do not claim that either of my cars are fast. now 14's for an unmodified sedan is pretty good, hint hint gotian ;) but it's not going to be "respected" on the streets nor is it going to be unbeatable by a majority of the serious street racers (not the people that "think" they are street racers")
now, everything is relative to the point that, most people haven't ridden in a 12xx car or a 11xx car and are only used to what their cars can do and judge those times based on that. well simply put, after driving a 15 sec car forever, 15's are pretty damn slow, and 14 seconds cars aren't that much better. Everytime i hit the gas i really just want something to kick in and launch the damn thing down the road at 100+ mph.
now, if you've been driving an 11sec car down the road everyday, it may get humdrum, but quite honestly it is one of the fastest cars on the road at any given time. hence why it would be considered "fast".
if everyone owned 11 sec. cars then 8's would be fast, or 7's.
being "faster" is not the same thing as fast, and that is another thing people don't realize. Considering that both of Gotians cars are faster than mine, doesn't make his cars "fast" per say, it just means that heads up, i might scare him into modifying that rx8 real nicely ;)
I'm not into american muscle as much as some people i know, and i would like a more balanced car. i've been considering someday getting a 240 that is solidly in the 13's and modding the suspension to the point that if i turn one direction i'm back going straight in half the time of normal cars.
but that is a pipe dream
the end
