how to replace a broken turn signal lever

Was wondering if someone could tell me how to replace the turn signal lever on a 96 camaro? Cruise control, delay wipers, mist, washer fluid...steering has an airbag. How do I get around the air bag?

Thanks.

Many of them on the newer steering columns simply pull straight out of the switch, while some don't. Does the car have the older style Saginaw die cast column or the plastic shrouded new design? With either type, if you have cruise control, there will be a connector inside the column jacket to be disconnected, and reconnected from the new lever.

it is a plastic shroud. The lever broke off inside the switch, so will have to replace both. The steering wheel is going to have to come off and would like to know how without messing up the airbag.

You really should have a service manual to perform the SIR disable. At a minimum it will invlove disconnection of the battery and careful attention to the centering coil spring position. Extreme caution should also be exercized when storing the removed inflator.

However, if your car has the newer style column, the steering wheel itself may not have to be removed. The shroud itself can actually be removed quite easily. There are three screws holding the upper and lower halves of the shroud together in conjunction with interlocking clips molded into the two halves. There is probably at least one screw holding the upper shroud to the column. The tilt lever will also need to be removed to remove the lower trim cover in most cases.

The turn/wiper switch assembly is held to the column by two screws, and does not interlock with the turn signal cancelling cam in a way that requires steering wheel removal. You can turn the steering wheel on most cars to access the front screw for the turn/wiper switch assembly, rather than remove the wheel.

to disable to airbag system... take the fuse for it out, and just for good measure and extra safety disconnect the battery
