High RPM's

I have a '92 Celica, 5-speed, w/ 1.6L engine and at 60mph in 5th, the tac says 3200rpm's. It has been this way since I bought it a year ago. This seems a little high to me as I have had other 4-cylinder vehicles that didn't run at that high of rpm's at 60mph. Is this normal for this car? If not, what can cause it to run that high in 5th? Most of my driving is in town 45mph or less but I have been doing some highway driving and it is starting to concern me.
Any help would be appreciated.
Thanks,
Andi

well, that's how toyota intended it to be.

i'm not exactly sure of the ACTUAL gear ratios for comparison, but i can tell ya this much

my 90 gt, has the 2.2L 5sfe... and with the stock transmisson at 60 in 5th i was doing somewhere of 3000rpm in 5th on the highway

i destroyed the stock tranny and swapped in a CAMRY transmisson, with a different gear ratio. now at 60 i'm doing about 2200rpm.

now, my 2.2L has excellent low speed torque for a car engine, IMO... but 2.2 liters is starting to get pretty big in displacement as far as 4-cylinders are concerned.... so the tranny swap to taller gearing (lower highway cruising rpm's) didn't affect me much as far as performance is concerned

now in your case, your 1.6L (4afe) only has about 100hp, and not nearly as much torque as the larger 5sfe, so toyota had to put deeper gearing in the car so performance didn't suffer too much. but because of this, at 60mph, your engine will be revving a bit more in 5th, to keep the car in its "powerband" so to say.... otherwise it probably wouldn't be as fun to drive... i know, i've driven ST celica's and they're fairly peppy for what they are. not that a 5sfe is a monster... lol

so, sorry to lecture you there. i just had to justify my means.

there's nothing wrong with your car. that's how it came out of the factory. and with proper care and maintenance it'll probly run 200,000 miles or more. you think 3200 @ 60 is bad ? hell i've seen honda's run 4000-4500 going down the highway at 60-65.
