Trans fluid service

Well first off im not doing a flush, i just want to drop the pan do the service that way. My understanding is that after you have your car all jackd up and on stands you can start unbolting the tranny pan(with something to catch the fluid underneath) and let the fluid drain. Here comes the frist question, i assume when unbolting the pan fluid will start to leak out, do you take it slow and let all the fluid drain out or....Then once all the fluid is out, replace filter(idk what this involves ive never been inside my tranny:icon16: ) then bolt the pan back up, pour fluid in thru the dipstick hole and check it, then start the car, and check/add as needed, and also, how do i make sure i dont over fill it? Im half paranoid about doin it, any comments, directions, ANYTHING on this is greatly appreciated:grinyes:

You have the right idea. Is a procedure to unbolt so it starts draining out of one corner but I've never mastered that, it's a real mess but you can somewhat control it. Originates from the fact that the fluid level is above the pan seam. Be sure to clean out the pan and magnetic washer. I have an '02 Vulcan and drain out w/refill took 7 qts. (be sure to refill with Mercon V) I recommend letting it down level before you start filliing because the dipstick/filler tube won't take it very fast and too fast will result in new and expensive fluid on the ground/floor.

Your 94 taurus takes dexron 111 transmission fluid.
If the transmission pan has the thick stiff type rubber resuable gasket
reuse it.
Add about 3 1/2 qts and start checking with dipstick engine running.
On the final level check get it good and hot after 10-15 minute drive and recheck fluid level.
If way overfull drain some out down to correct level.

OK 2002 needs Mercon V
But also on them they need a total flush with the filter change.
You need to get all of the old fluid out of it or it will ruin the new fluid.

I would reccomend changing the filter along with cleaning the magnet while you're in there.

The owners manual should head you in the right direction.

Irall--- My post was for MT-2500. We have known each other a while and I had to give a little jab. Sorry if it confused you. The site he gave you has a lot of free information for Ford owners. You can also go here (http://www.ford.com) and search a lot of info on your vehicle. Again, I apologize for the confusion.

I'm looking to have trans service done on my 03 taurus this week, and am still not sure which route to take. I really think I should drop the pan, change the filter and gasket, then refill with Mercon V. Is it really necessary to flush the trans? Thanks!

If you want to change half of your fluid a pan drop will work.

If you want to change all the old fluid I would suggest following this procedure.

I have done it several times on the three Taurus setting in my driveway.

On the ford transmission with mercon V you need to go a total flush.
Even as low as 25K I have saw the fluid get bad and the only way to fix it is with a total flush.
If you just pan drop and fiter the old bad fluid left in there will contaminate the new fluid.
One of them ford things.
Look around there is a Ford TSB on some of them calling for a total flush.

what about the filter? my car has 70K on it and I have no idea if the service has ever been done before. and if you flush dirty fluid through the system can that ruin the lines or internal parts? I'm very curious on this subject because I've already had a transmission fail on my last car. Thanks!

You did not say what kind of car or transmission you have.
A flush pushes the dirty fluid out of not threw the system.
Always change the filter. That is if yours has one. What transmission do you have?
The stupid jiffie lubs like to selll a flush with out filter change.
They are to lazy to change the filters.
To Flush or not To Flush ?
Just like Kenney Rodgers said you have got to know when to fold and when to hold.
If the fluid has high mileage 100K or over or is real dirty you had better hold.
On a trans that has had good regular service at 50K or sooner a flush is good.
But be ware of jiffie/quick/wallmart /fast lubes that offer power and fast flushes.
They have abused and over rated the trans flush.
They have a habit of using one fit all fluid out of the same barrel that fits all.
They just throw in a bottle of additive to make it fit all. Or worse they pitch in a bottle of cleaner or dope in it that can do more harm than good. And will tell you the filter does not need changing with a flush.
Just remember that all new fluid makes a high detergent cleaner that will break loose all varnish and dirt and grit in the trans and drop it in valve body and solenoids.
Always change the filter and go easy on or use no dope and cleaner.
Adjust/check the bands and linkage on the trans that have bands and adjustments.
Always use the trans fluid the trans/manf calls for. And be aware that some manf have changed the type of fluid specs since the trans was manf.
Some fords have changed the specs and a lot of cry/dodge have gone to the newer type of fluid on their trans service.
Also some fords have tsb’s and require a total complete trans flush to cure trans shifting problems. Some as low as 30K
If a person does not have a flush machine a old 5 gallon bucket and a couple of rubber hoses to connect to the cooler lines and with the other end in the bucket will make a good flush machine. Just put the hoses in the bucket and start the engine and start pouring fluid into the trans until the fluid running into the bucket gets good and clean.
It usually takes 16-20 qts. To get a good flush.
Flush or No flush always service the trans filter and trans on a good regular basic.
People that keep the serviced have a lot less trans problems.

i love it when you get the wrong filter kit.....my car has been sitting all weekend because the guy didnt give me the correct kit...im so wonderfully pleased with him, anyone thats done this, did you have trouble with the o-ring coming out? or getting it in? We were using a rubber mallet to get the filter in, but since its the wrong kit i dunno if the correct one will go in easier? do you have to be extremely careful not to gouge the tranny when scrapin out the o-ring?

just a little follow up, VERY EASY to do. im 16 and i figured it out...haha. I put 8 Qts in, i can definetly tell it shifts smoother, especially on the kick downs(or ups whatever) from like 2-4 or what have you. Money well spent IMO especially with the wonderful trannys taurus's get:shakehead
