2001 Expedition, Spark Plug 1

I just bought the car around a month ago, and last week I noticed when trying to accelerate, the car lags and has some trouble. I brought it to Autozone and they are telling me plug 1 is misfiring. I looked around the engine and couldnt easily locate the plugs. Can someone direct me to where they are and also the firing order?

Ok, I located the plugs. This is the first vehicle I've owned that has individual coil packs and I was looking for normal plug wires. If anyone can provide the firing order, or which is plug 1, it would be appreciated.

It is always the one on the passenger side and most forward from the passenger compartment on the Ford engines.

I am just logging in because I have the same problem. I was told by a tune up place that it would cost over $400 to have a tune up. I want to try it myself any suggestions and how did it go for you. Please.

I would not suggest you change the plugs yourself. The the coils themselves are about $60. And the spark plug on the rear passenger side is really hard to get to. But the coils down really need replacing, my 2000 Expo has only had one replaced and his 150k miles. Anyway good luck.

Usually the coil does not fail (most of the time). The spark plug boot will allow the spark to go through it and cause the misfire. Replacment of the boots along with the plugs should cure the problem. Replace the entire coil as a last resort to cure the miss.

Well, I bought a new set of plugs and one coil pack. The guy at Autozone said the coil packs rarely fail, it was in the '97 models that had most of the problem. He said to try the plug and that sure cure it, which it did. It took a day for the check engine light to go off and the truck seems to be running better. I need to change the other 7 plugs, which appears to be a chore being half of them are buried in the back on the engine.

Make sure you buy double platinum plugs as they are hard to change especially on the 5.4L.
