The end of an era.

It's a bit hasty, but apparently Schumacher has announced his retirement on his slow down lap at Monza.

A sun sets, another rises, welcome aboard Kimi.

EDIT: Now official, he still will have a role in Ferrari apparently, to be announced.

:crying:

It is very sad to see the man that has defined the sport for so long leave. His career will be difficult, if not impossible to match. Few athletes from all of recorded history match his dominance. It truely is then end of an era. I hope with every inch of my being that he will win the WDC this year and that Ferrari will hold on to the WCC.

:(

Not unexpected, but until the end I hoped he'd stay...

Yeah he's doing great, what else is he going to do? I mean sure it would be worse to leave because you suck but this is the total opposite!!! I watched the USGP 06 on speed on demand (only way I could catch it) and I watched that Ferrari race around Indy, flawlessly. I couldn't see Shumacher do anything else. I'm a redbull fan though.

He probably saw the shame that JV left with and hoped to avoid ever looking like that :) .

I think I read that protecting Massa's blooming career played heavily into the decision. He'll also play some sort of non-driving role at Ferrari now. Forza Schumacher

Surprising to see him leave now, I thought he'd want to hang around and break the 100 wins. Would have been interesting how he'd have compared to Raikkonen.

Hmmmm... 100 would have been nice, but do you think he would have made it? If he raced for Ferrari next year (which is a big if) he would have to win at least seven races considering he won the last three this season. I think he knows that he is going to win this season. If he drove for BMW next year, Kimi would have an even better chance at beating him quite a bit, not to mention Alonso in the Mercedes. I think he made the right decision. Especially retiring with Ferrari.
