I just bought a 14b turbo to replace my dead turbo but I notice now that the turbine fan wheel has a small corner missing on one of the blades. Is this going to effect the performance of the turbo??

yes

in what way, is it going to spool up slower or what??

Well, its fucking up the balance of the turbo. I would just get another one and keep that a crutch if you need one. 14b's are dime a dozen anyway.

Wow, what a clear answer...It could effect the performance but it depends on a few things, if the chip was caused by something foreign hitting the blade (like a damn french person) or if the chip occured because there is shaft play. If it was a foreign object than it really won't have a large impact if it was shaft play though it will not spool right.

the guy I bought it off of claimed that he just had it rebuilt and never installed it. The turbo has almost no shaftplay.

so if it is rebuilt ten how do you have a chip in the turbine if it has never been hooked up? how much did you pay or it?

maybe it was already chipped before the guy rebuilt it and he decided to use the same turbine wheel, i'm not sure. I paid about $100 shipped.

Well think about it, if its not in balace its going to put funny pressure on different parts of the bearing and its going to cause it to wear out funny. It might not happen for a while, but I wouldnt use it for anything more than like a week or two crutch turbo so you can get yourself to/from work or whatever.

Compressor wheels are cheap. Mark the nut/shaft with a pen and replace it.

Marking the nut and shaft doesn't do anything about the balancing though. Either that, or I'm about to learn something new today.

Yeah, you need to have the wheel balanced.
