I just saw a picture of your 30s on a TJ. Looks very good. In 60K I might think about going down to 30s.

When these wear out I want to go to 32's with a lift. If only a stock rodeo had the ground clearnace of a stock TJ :banghead:

Seriously, I understand justifying the money can be a big tricky, specially if the present tires are still fairly new - but see if you can't list them on Craig's list, sale them, and get some taller tires before you dent that oil pan even more.
Those 29"/R15's are very common tires, you'll get someone to pick those up from you quick.
That's the only bad thing about living in Colorado - is the most beautiful areas require some beating to the undercarriage.
Our 1st Rodeo got nailed on the HolyCross trail up by Homestead/Vail on the oil pan as well, we were running 31" tires, didn't dare to dream putting on 32"s - it would've gone backwards :uhoh: - didn't have the ummph.
No damage either - we had our mechanic make a pretty sturdy full undercarriage skid plate instead; but I'll be damned, forgot all about it when we traded it :crying:
Haven't needed it for this Rodeo, but sure would've liked to put it on anyway, just incase.

It wasnt really a problem with the hight of the tires or lack of lift, just stupidity. Even with 32's and a lift I would have hit something on it, was a good sized rock. Luckily I didnt go up high enough on it to get stuck or do real damage. I should have been paying more attention. I might lift it before getting the bigger tires, not sure yet. Any trail rated a 7 or less can be done with a stock rodeo on 30's just have to pay attention to avoid the larger stuff.

It can be that way any time of the year in the mountains. There are way more cases of hypothermia in the summer then in winter. Alot of ppl dont realize how cold it can get there in the summer or how fast the temps can drop.
Story time..
When I was a kid we used to ride trials bikes and were always going to the mountains to ride. When my half brother moved here from los lunas new mexico we got him into riding them too. We decided to go to rampart range one weekend which isnt very high in elevation (around 9k ft at the highest I think) so the temps arent much cooler then in denver. While we were loading up dad asked why he wasnt packing a coat. He said "what for? its the middle of july and going to be in the upper 90's". We convinced him to take one. At the trail head we had to convince him again to pack it on his bike. Was getting around 80 deg by then.
2 hours later and deep into the trails we were riding in a blizzard and there was a foot of snow on the ground. He now keeps a coat with him at all times no matter what the temperature is. :rofl:

Sorry, we have the 30x9.5 R15's on our Toyota p/up and they only measure up to 29" tall, so I just assumed other tires of that size were 29" tall as well - sorry, me bad.
You know, I've got to be honest, I've never paid attention to the trail ranking numbers, as my parents were always big on 4x4in when I was a kid and just went for it - mind you we had a 3/4 ton 4x4 Chevy in those days.
To this day, if I'm familiar with the trail I just go for it, I never even knew Holycross was rated an 8 out of 10 - I mean, I'm sure I've read it on the posted sign a time or two, it just never clicked.
I've been up and down that trail so many times in both Rodeo's, on the ATV's, in our past Chevy truck, and my sister and B-i-law attempted it in their Chevy Trailblazer when they had it - that was the 1st vehicle I was in that just couldn't do it.
That one time scuff on the oil pan of the '91 Rodeo was because we were goofing around, like you had been, and tried an angle we shouldn't of; other then that, the '97 Rodeo obtained a scratch from a tree limb all the way down the side coming down from the flat-tops on Coffee Pot trail (up outside of Rifle/Dot Zero). We buffed it out pretty good, can barely see it.
I've never found myself needing to spend the extra $$ for a lift, but I'd like to see yours when you're done - sounds like a nice plan.
