and yes, it was a bitch to get out. the bolt that held the bracket wouldnt budge without twisting the bracket itself. finally wised up and held the relay in place till it let go. bent the bracket back and bolted up the new one.
i removed the steering wheel, flip down pocket, fuse cover, and the hood release lever assembly to make getting in there easier. wouldve been cake had that bolt just let go easy. if i had to do it again i bet i could do it in less than 15 mins. shop wanted 150.00 to do it.

i apologize, i guess after rereading my post it does seem a bit pointless. my point was, after researching, i found most posts made it out to be a pain in the ass. i was just trying to explain that its really not that bad and dont be discouraged to do it yourself by what you may read in the forum.

as for whether or not it did anything i guess i wont know till it gets about 90 again, if it starts no prob when its that hot out then it did something.

Ah, nice work man, no its really not a big deal..you just have to be able to fit under the damn dash, I can find my way around under there by feel now, its sad..

Wow. I refuse to replace the main relay in my car. If it's too hot to start, it sits. I reached up there for it under the dash to wiggle the wire a little and the bracket came off it's mount so the relay is just dangling there. But when the weather cooled off, sure enough it started right up. PITA! I would've just pulled it down to make sure the connections were good but I was too lazy to unbolt the starter relay over the hood release to fit the main relay through the space... like a kid playing that blocks/shapes game trying to put a square block through a circular hole...

The "starter relay" is a solonoid and its under the hood. Turtle = Ricer.

i never had to remove the switch over the hood release. once the main relay was unbolted and disconnected, i pulled it up through the hole that was left after i removed the flip down box.
btw, even if your connections appear to be good it may still not work properly due to internal problems of the switch. cold solder joints are what ive found to cause the problem.
just replace that thing, its so easy really. and then you wont have to wait for your car, girlfriends dont wait on cars ya know:grinno:

Actually tsc, there is a relay behind the hood latch...for the starter. The solenoid is triggered by the relay.

This is coming from the guy who owns an Escort.

And NO you are wrong. The starter relay is indeed right above the hood release. I have a printout at home from the Helms manual.

LOL... I'm married. And I'm going to by a newer car soon anyway. I'm not putting any more money into the CRX.

How stupid are you going to feel if I have to scan the page and put it up on the web just so to prove I'm right? Frodo can vouch for the starter relay position and I'm sure many others can too. Jeez.

FrodoGT

I can vouch because not only is it in the manual...I unplugged it once and found out the hard way.

I will feel stupid indeed. But I must point out, that that is not a starter relay, it is a solonoid relay.

turtlecrxsi

I don't doubt it is a solenoid relay. I'm just going by what that page in the shop manual said it was...

I must admit when I am wrong. I must have been hallucinating because I could've sworn one of those shop manual pages said "starter relay" next to "main relay" in the relay location page. But NO it does not. So STFU to me. LOL

lol hey were all wrong sometimes just some of us more than others. maybe everytime we swear 5 cents should go into a swear jar.

anyways the other day it wasnt very hot out but when i tried to turn the car on it just cranked. my heater was on 2 so i turned it off and tried to start again and it came right on. could that be the relay goin out? everyones been complainin about theirs lately and i kno mines never been changed out so im tryin to see if im gonna have to change it soon.

Who knows? It could've been excessive juice straining the battery. I know I've tried countless times to get my car started and had it jumped off and floored the gas and finally it started. Some days I just turn the key and it starts instantly. Damn old car. I believe the wiring is just getting so old. If things go right the crx will be gone soon and I'll have a new SUV... I'm such a mippie... haha...

the gauges in my civic hatch that im pickin up dont work. well the speedometer does but none of the others do. would this be caused by the main relay?? im goin to the junkyard tomorrow to find some parts and need to kno so i can snag one...or maybe two

I have a feeling my main relay is going to start giving me grief soon enough..thisll be the third time in a month on a hot day that it has just cranked..usually Ill turn the key back and try again once or twice and itll fire up.

Main relay really has nothing to do with your gauges man. Either you guages are broken, your sender switches are broken, or its wiring related.

thefooshmeister
09-21-2006, 02:28 AM
k ill find another set of gauges while im there. what are the sender switches? i hate electrical thats why i got rywires stuff when i did my swap but i guess nows a good time to learn. i talked to the kid that owns the car today and he said the fuel, tach, and oil temp all dont work. hopefully ill get it this weekend and can start workin on it soon. the clutch is bad and the head gasket leaks but i need a good project to do before winter, so i cant complain.

The speedometer is cable driven and also turns the odometer. The rest are electronic. It's probably a fuse.

thefooshmeister
09-21-2006, 11:40 AM
yeah i kno the speedo is just controlled by the cable cuz i remember messin with it durin the swap thats why i ruled that out but i have no idea with the rest of it. ill just check the fuses when i get to look at it next, as long as its somethin easy ill be happy

All of my guages were dead when I bought my car..it was the #1 fuse. also my turn signals did not work..and because of a wiring short or something absurd like that, the guages only worked in reverse..(weird) so I replaced the blown fuse and they worked fine, until it started blowing the fuse and killing the car everytime I went into reverse..I just unplugged the reverse light switch and said the hell with it. I think it was grounding on the trans housing..oh well, long story short..check your fuses.
