nissan serena engine problem

Hi everyone

I'm thinking of buying a serena off a family member theres just 1 problem she says its blowing white smoke she also says she has taken it to a mechanic and they have said that the diesel pump needs fine tuning has anybody ever come across a problem like this before any help would be great
