Mystery part in engine

I figured I would put this in problem diagnosis, seeing as how im having a problem identifying this part. lol.
One of the lines from my boost controller came loose last night, so i was putting it back on today. Then I was poking around the engine just looking at different things. I dont get much time in the bright daylight to look at the car or anything. Anyways, I came upon this. It was exactly in this condition, with the hose not attached or anything. Can anyone tell me what it is? Its behind the motor, just under the throttle body. I circled it in white.

Looks like the EGR valve. Top of mine looks exactly the same. Same shape and has the little vacuum hose coming out of it. Mine fell off once (no clue how) and it threw a CEL.

Yep EGR, don't need it, it's for emissions.

I dunno if its just psychological, but plugging it back on and ziptying it seemed to make my car run a little smoother. hmm...cant hurt though right?

A more clear picture would help. David, he's running a 4g63 and it's quite a bit different. But definitely keep it plugged in, but give us a more clear picture.

EGR will make your car run smoother, I remember learning it but it causes a rough idle after warmed up but not at WOT.

Unless you have dsmlink ;) I blocked mine off like alot of people and did away with a shit load of vacumme lines

I know he is. You can still tell its the EGR valve though. The system itself is still the same too.

When thatline was disconnected it could have been making your car run shitty for 2 reasons, first that would be a boost leak, not huge but even a small one can have a negative effect, second it could have caused your car to go into "safe mode" because an emmisions control system wasn't working basically the ecu makes the car run shitty so you can limp it to the mechanic.

Yeah looked like the BOV to me at first and I was like, uhhhhhhh....
Yeah, thats your EGR and replugging it in will make it run better. Congratulations.

if having the egr unplugged would put it in safe mode, does anything have to be reset, now that ive plugged it back in?

It's usually just good to reset the ECU just in case. Disconnect the neg(-) battery and let it sit for 10 minutes. Should get everything fine then

Doesnt it actually only take like 10 seconds? Cant hurt to let it sit longer though.

I can't wait to see all the problems I get from everything I've removed. lol

taking off that battery cable like that wont affect the safc would it?
david-b

Not at all. SAFC is all saved internally. If it's connected right, it should only be on when the car is started. If that's right, you have no problems.
And that was 10 minutes... not 10 seconds Thor. I'll let that one slide. haha.

Yeah, ten seconds is closer to what David should have said Thor. It doesn't take ten mins for the ECU to discharge  . I disconnect the battery, and hold the key over in the start position for 15-20 seconds.

I've had times where I disconnected the battery for a minute and still had the CEL on and/or showing a code in memory. So that leads me to believe that it takes a little longer to clear it out and reset it. A longer time isn't bad though. Disconnect it, take a piss and grab a beer and then you're all set. That's what I do.

^Yeah, it's not worth arguing about. :P Holding the key over will decrease the time and discharge all the caps.

Wow, where do I begin. My battery died, it was under warranty so I got a free one and saved $80. Before putting the new battery in, I saw this thread and checked my EGR valve and it was also disconnected. Now my car was running like crap before, surging, smelled like fumes and it would also have a Check engine light, dont want to talk abouit the gas milege I got. After I connected it, and its been about 3 days of lots of driving I have no cell and the car idles purfect and my gas milege improved. Also, the smoke from the exhaust I though it was the turbo but if I disconnect the EGR it smokes, when I connect it it stops. I am confused to why but as long it fixes the problem I am OK. I just cant image why such a small thing would cause so many problems.

hmm...thats funny. on second thought, when i reconnected the egr, it didnt make any difference that i can tell. maybe it makes a little tiny miniscule bit of difference, but nothing that matters to me.
my car idled like crap before this egr anyways, and autozone scanned it and say its the maf and tps sensor malfunction. maybe if those sensors were working i would be able to tell the difference in the egr being connected or not. or maybe this just proves the ongoing point that every single dsm is different than another. or maybe my car is about to blow up.

I know its for emmissions and most people have it disconnected but for me its making a big difference. I am not familiar with cameras but I might try to make a movie and show you when I disconnect it and floor the car what happens and when I connect it. Also the rpms will play a lot. I really dont know why everything leads to EGR when it isnt that important but it does fix my problems. The biggest was the smell of fumes and the car doesnt do it any more. I think I will make a movie of my car anyways :), I always wanted to.

It does make a difference for most people. My valve is bad. When I let off the gas and drop to neutral, the rpms will drop down and then sit at 2000rpm and slowly drop back down. It also causes idle surge for me too. IMO, the EGR valve is very important.
