C/F decal

Hi guys,have a question about C/F decals have a plan to do a large scale job with c/f.whole model covered in c/f .
do I have to paint body panels first? or can I just put c/f on?
Next question would it also be a good idea yo clear coat it and which brand ,Tamyia or other brand

Hello Shayne,
its better to paint black either semi or gloss, to give the decal something to "Key" onto. Also allows small nicks and holes to blend in better.

I am using Scale Motorsport sheets at moment and TS13, no worries, as well on hard parts I use Tamiya acrylic thinner to help. Treat gently tho.

I have SMS decals at moment if you need any.

This has been covered many times. For the base coat, it should be semi-gloss black (x-18)
Most poeple clear coat their decals, a lot of people use Tamiya's x-19 smoke to add depth and realism before clearing. I personally like Gunze's stuff better as it is not as 'hot' as Tamiya's lacquers, TS-13 (clear) is considered extremely hot and there are a lot of people who have had their decals ruined by it. Yet again, if used in extremely light mist coats it can too give good results.

I use C/F decals from a large variety of manufacturers - SMS, Studio27, Modelers, Renaissance - it's a great way to simulate different types of C/F on different areas of race cars.

Though two people above both suggested using semi-gloss black under the decal, I'd just like to add that using gloss black paint under the decals works best for me. I tend to find the semigloss is a bit too rough, and when you're settling a decal onto it, it can be very hard to reposition the piece on the semigloss. The gloss paint's smoother surface will allow you to slide the decal around a bit longer until it's in position. That's not to say the others are wrong, perhaps they are just better at CF decal than I am (and I wouldn't be surprised).
