first of all i am very new to the forum sites. I have a 99 eclipse (hyperlink removed...please read rules and regulations governing posting of links-Shpyder) gs with the 420a. i recently had a nitrous backfire due to user error which threw a rod threw the block. I am set on useing nitrous so i bought a forged short block from slowboy racing which comes with wiseco 10.5 to 1 pistons and eagle rods, i had the head ported and polished (intake and exhaust) and had it resurfaced a lil less than 10 thousands. so i will be running a lil less then 11-1 compression. i have stock cams, a header, intake, and catback exhaust. I will be running a 100 shot of nitrous. my question is how can i retard the timing on the motor. i have heard i can get a msd-dis retard box, or if i can find one a apexi ignition timing controller. i need to know the best route

The MSD DIS2 boxes do allow you to control your timing to whatever degree you wish... Although I don't have much experience with them, they seem the best route to go in this case... What else are you using to monitor your motors status?

i am useing the typical gauges as far as aftermarket gauges water, oil pressure, oil temp, and air fuel. but i also recently purchased a s-afc which i am really not familiar with but juss to mees with the air fuel curve. if it makes a difference for spark i am useing a one step colder spark plug.

The air fuel ratio gauges are very inaccurate... You should almost run a pyrometor with that setup I think. You should also consider a fuel pressure regulator and fuel pressure gauge as that will help with your setup... The AFC's are nice for fine tuning the fuel to where you need it, but you need the proper things to tune with it. You should get a datalogger or a wideband to better monitor your motors output. That is also why I suggest the pyrometor for it as well...
The one step colder plug will help some. I'm sure adding the MSD ignition box will help a good bit with this also. If you don't already have it, then I would suggest getting a new coil also while your doing it all. :2cents:
Might as well do it right the first time rather than grenade your bottom end again. lol

sorry i failed to mention i already have the msd coil. but speaking of the msd box i was talking more in lines of the timing retard box not the 6a or 6al box. yeah bro i really dont have the time, patience or the money to do this all over again.......i juss wanna make sure my car will be ok for nitrous this time. i am planning on taking my car to get dyno tuned after the install but they said i had to get the right equipment to tune it first i.e. (air/fuel, ignition retard controller, etc..)

Well the one MSD box also has a timing controller in it... I can't remember which one it was though... Its almost 3am here and I'm blahh.... Um oh I almost forgot to tell you, this thread should have been posted in one of the appropriate subforums. Its ok now though, the mods will move it to one of them by morning I'm sure... I'm sure that some other 420a owners could tell ya more about what you should run for your setup better than I could. Like I said, I don't have much experience with nitrous or adjusting the MSD boxes. I think that your going in the right direction with it all though by finding out what else you need for sure before running it again here.

Why are you so set on nitrous? If you ask me, nitrous is the last power adder to an engine. It's the most risky and causes the most problems. Look into a turbo or something before you start bowing to nitrous for power.

i really dont know why i am set on nitrous. i think it is because i went from domestic to import and where the didnt make a turbo for my car so i relied on nitrous and never once had a problem with it till i myself blew the motor up that really isnt the question i just have never messed with a distributorless motor before

Nitrous isnt bad if you use it right, it just gets a bad rep because all the rich bastards get it and think they can use a 500 shot like f&f
