This has been an intermited problem....when it first started the speedometer would stick at about 20 mph when ign turned off...would not reset when truck was re started. ( 2003 silverado Z71 off road...5.3 auto 4x4 ) I found that by unplugging the plug on transfer case would resolve the problem. Now the speedometer is sticking at 60MPH and unplugging either plug on transfer case helps. If I start- stop engine repeadily the speedometer setting will drop by aprox 10 MPH,at each start up.ANY ideas on how to track the problem down???.....ign sw?...bad ground on speedometer head?? (this truck also has steering wheel info center)...Thanks ,Sid

I had the exact same problem with my 2004. Mine also made a slight grinding sound right when you turn the ignition on, and yes turning it on and off repeatedly would move it back 10 miles per hour each time. I did a little research and found that it is a pretty common problem. It has to do with the electronics/mechanics in the instrument cluster itself. I don't know the exact cause, but don't believe it is a do it yourself fix. If you are out of warranty, the dealer will charge around $400 to fix the problem. I also found a local speedometer shop for around the same price. Well, actually neither of these places will do the actual repair, they will simply remove the cluster (which takes about 3 minutes) and send the unit to a specialty shop. I found the specialty shop that the dealer uses (Phoenix, AZ), pulled the cluster myself and had it fixed for $235. I dropped the unit off during my lunch hour and picked it up after work on the same day. Reinstalled the cluster in their parking lot. Literally a 3 minute job. Good luck
