Fuel Pump :-(

I believe that my fuel pump is screwed. I removed my fuel filter and let the gas drain out that was in the fuel line and pump. I turn the key (not all the way so it starts) and i little bit of gas came out. I kept doing it and eventually no gas was coming out of it. so i believe that my fuel pump is bad. So the firebid manual i have doesnt tell me how to get to the fuel pump. anyone know the easiest way to do so? besides paying $375 at a shop.

I think you have to drop the fuel tank to get to the fuel pump.
What type of car are we lookin at anyway?

I'm assuming a 91 Firebird judging by the sig. Cut a hole in the hatch area where the slope is. That's the easiest way. We had to do that to my cousins '99 to get to the return fuel line.

I thought I heard that trick of cutting a hole somewhere in the rear...of the car. :icon16:

I did it on my 90 RS.

I found pics and instructions on this site and it turned a nightmare (drop the axle and tank), into a couple hours max if that.

Im thinking of doing that because dropping the axle sounds like a pain. Do know where i can find those instructions for dropping the axle?..just so i can see how its done

If you have a haynes or chiltons manual it should be in there.

I strongly disagree with the hole cutting. This if not patched together properly will weaken the the already weak structural integrity of the car. Let alone rather dangerous way of doing if you think about it. All it takes is one spark :eek2:

Do it the right way, it's not that bad. Just spend the extra cash and replace it with a Ac/Delco pump so you don't have to do it again for a long time.

And someone correct me if I'm wrong but didn't the 98's and above have a factory access panel?

I don't recall where they all were but I searched for an hour or so under fuel pump, replacement, etc. One of the threads had step by step pictures. Spend an hour and you'll be amazed how easy it is once you start.

I agree it isn't the right thing to do, but me dropping the axle in my garage wasn't either. But indeed if you are going to drop the axle replace it with a good pump. I had to drop my tank in my Blazer (no axle in the way) and a year later I had to do it again so indeed if you drop the axle make sure you don't have to again.

I wish the 91 firebird had an access panel. :-( Anyway thank you everyone on your incite. I really appreciate it.

:lol2: Yeah, and you were worried about blowing the car up from splicing a couple of wires :lol2:

Just do yourself a little favor, soak all associated bolts/nuts in penetrating oil overnight before even contemplating starting the job. OTherwise, the procedure has been covered many times and is not that bad.

i dropped the tank in my friends 86 once for the fuel pump.out of 3 of us only i knew what i was doing so i didnt have much help.not too fun, but probably smarter than cutting holes.although if u can weld all you need is a piece of sheet metal bigger than the hole you cut.it'll probably be stronger than the original.i think i dropped the axle like 5 times cuz i kept putting bolts and stuff back in the wrong order.you get it put back together and then you find out u cant fit the next bolt in without lowering it all again.stupid designing.
