Check Engine Light

I have had my 2001 LS for a year. I have taken it in for service about 6 times mainly for the same problem - CEL. It is always the same code PO305. They have replaced the #5 coil pack, replaced the injector wire and two weeks ago they replaced the #5 coil and plug. Yesterday the engine light came on again. I smelled a burning smell just before it happened. The car runs fine even with the light on. I just feel very frustrated that three different repair centers have not been able to fix this problem. It seems the light comes on within two weeks of being repaired. Does anyone have any ideas on how to fix this? The car is under an extended warranty, but only for another 10,000 miles and I want to get this fixed as soon as possible.

Sounds like their using non-OEM parts that can't handle the job.

PO305 is kind of general, "Misfire at #5" but if that's the only code coming up, it's most likely a spark related problem.
* Coil Pack
* Spark Plug

A bad injector should throw a selection of injector codes as well.

Burning smell ? That sounds scary.

Sounds like your car is the victim of the common leaking spark plug well seals, contributing to the burning smell and saturating the coils in oil which causes the misfire. See if there were any signs of oil on the coil packs that you've had replaced. If so, you need to replace the valve cover gaskets and spark plug well seals with the revised gasket kit to keep this problem from continually causing misfires.

Rod - Thank you for your reply. We are having a hard time getting this problem fixed at the dealer. Where can I buy the revised gasket kit?

I haven't actually had to get them yet (my wife has a 2002 and I have a 2004) so I'm not sure part numbers, etc, but the dealership or through www.fastpartsnetwork.com should have them.

I did a quick search on the forum and you may want to take note of the last post on the following thread:
