Hello,
Since SLR factory only have Silver and Black... so I would start with those 2 colors first... and I was thinking to cut the roof to make in open top... But I forgot this is a wing door... so I can't make it kaaa....(may be another way... just like the old 300SL has open top with normal door opening)
BTW, where is the forum meeting? can you PM me?
Thanks
Jelly

Since SLR factory only have Silver and Black...
You have more options; in 2006 some nice colors were added to the SLR color chart:
Crystal Amazonite Blue
Crystal Antimon Gray
Crystal Cassiterite Black
Crystal Coronadite Gray
Crystal Covelline Blue
Crystal Digenite Blue
Crystal Fayalite Green
Crystal Galaxite Black
Crystal Laurite Silver
Crystal Osmium Gray
Crystal Palladium Gray
Crystal Picotite Black
Pure Black
ScaleColors and CobraColors have some of them, if you want to change your idea about black and silver :)

SLR also came in Alabaster White, Anthrecite Gray, Iriduim Silver, etc. Not just Black and Silver ;)
Black and silver is, however, the most popular color choice for it.

Why not? The door hinge is on the pillar, not on the roof, so you can cut the top side of the door (that closes on the roof) and it will be ok, I think.

Sunroof SLR :grinyes: If u have seen the Tamiya Enzo Kit ... There is a middle piece between the two doors... can also make it for the SLR .. Two thin pillars at the top then have the middle clear roof

I understand the frustration that Tamiya has lowered the parts content, but from what I have seen it really doesn't affect the final appearance of the model, unless you display the engine outside the body.
I'm getting the model soon to review for Scale Auto magazine. I'll be watching this and other buildup threads for moral support, in case I have any problems myself w/the buildup. Personally I'm glad it's not a 250-piece kit. This allows me to actually build it and not just pretend to want to build it and never actually get around to it like my Tamiya Enzo or my Fujimi EM models which get pushed aside constantly for easier instant-gratification builds

man that's really great work on the silver SLR,and the convertible project is interesting too~~~looking foward to see it~but this kit really got many flaws, seems the fitness is not that good as usual on tamiya kits, gaps and staggering some where, and the panel line of headlight washer is damn toooooo wide...any way,it looks good finally, but tamiya really sucks.

Funny, I just spent 25 hours building the SLR for a magazine review and found it was a pleasure to build, looks awesome finished, and the fit of the parts is excellent. Just a few minor tweaks and careful assembly and all the gaps are perfect, the doors fit tight and the hood looks great closed. Better than 99% of the Tamiya Enzos I've seen.

i do trust you buddy.i don't have this kit so i just tell what i'm feeling from jelly's pics.seems there's a gap between the engine hood and the body, but maybe it wasn't narrow shutted in that picture.and there's a gap between the side triangle window and the door, and didn't you see the front wheel arch?that's not good, and i'm sure that's not jelly's fault.and the gap which thesaint111 mentioned, and the most terrible, the panel line of the headlight washer,i'm sure you've seen the real thing, that maybe more than 10 times wider in scale.

It's there, I had to look for it, because when you have the built model in front of you you are not viewing from anything like the crazy angle of that photograph. If you were in that same position with the model built or even looking at the 1:1, you'd poke your eye or bang your head on the open door that's in the way. That portion of the interior sill is painted black, and the portion of the body it mates to is also black, it's the rubber seal area for the door which is painted black after the body color is laid down. In fact it looks better w/the gap from a normal viewing angle from the side, as it makes that molded-in rubber seal look like a separate part.

The fit of the hood, side panels, wheel arches, windows and doors of my SLR is nearly perfect, not displaying the mismatches you may have seen on some of the other in-progress or finished SLR models, and everyone who has seen it has been very impressed w/the fit of it (mine fits better than the one I saw on Tamiya's website). I planned ahead for possible fit problems after seeing the first ones built here, and test-fit along the way at every step. The quarter window gap you mention isn't there, the photo (which is 3X normal size) is fooling you, there is no gap there at all, that is one piece of glass from the edge of the body all the way to the door opening (shaped like a Z) and most of it gets painted black aside from the small transparent triangle. The engraved headlight washer detail can't be engraved any smaller or it's going to get filled in with paint. It's a model, it's not a 1:1, you have to see it in person, not from oversized gnat's-eye-view pictures on the 'net that look like they are intended to make something look bad. Seriously, it's a non-issue. A good builder can always point out minor kit flaws and their own finishing flaws and focus on them, but then stand back and look at the model as a whole, or when others do that, and the flaws tend to disappear.
I wish I could show off my pics and model here sooner, I am very impressed w/the kit after building it, considering I was also quite skeptical of all the potential body-fit problems before the kit landed in my hands. That's one reason I'm defending it so much; it was fun and rewarding to build, looks fantastic in person, and it was relatively easy to catch potential problems and make sure they weren't problems with the finished model.

In fact it looks better w/the gap from a normal viewing angle from the side, as it makes that molded-in rubber seal look like a separate part.
i do trust you buddy.i don't have this kit so i just tell what i'm feeling from jelly's pics.seems there's a gap between the engine hood and the body, but maybe it wasn't narrow shutted in that picture.and there's a gap between the side triangle window and the door, and didn't you see the front wheel arch?that's not good, and i'm sure that's not jelly's fault.and the gap which thesaint111 mentioned, and the most terrible, the panel line of the headlight washer,i'm sure you've seen the real thing, that maybe more than 10 times wider in scale.
That's one reason I'm defending it so much; it was fun and rewarding to build, looks fantastic in person, and it was relatively easy to catch potential problems and make sure they weren't problems with the finished model.

put a piece of rod, (maybe even a paper clip) drill hole on both sides, the wing and in the body. Insert the rods from the inside of the body. If this is clear to you? The progress looks great keep us updated.
