BRISBANE, Australia - Steve Irwin, the Australian television personality and environmentalist known as the "Crocodile Hunter," was killed Monday by a stingray during a diving expedition, Australian media said. He was 44.

Irwin was filming an underwater documentary on the Great Barrier Reef in northeastern Queensland state when the accident occurred, Sydney's The Daily Telegraph newspaper reported on its Web site.

The Australian Broadcasting Corp. said Irwin was diving near Low Isles near the resort town of Port Douglas, about 1,260 miles north of Brisbane.

A helicopter carrying paramedics flew to the island, but he died from a stingray barb to the heart, ABC reported on its Web site.

Telephone calls to Australia Zoo, Irwin's zoo in southern Queensland, were not immediately answered.

Irwin is famous for his enthusiasm for wildlife and his catchcry "Crikey!" in his television program "Crocodile Hunter," which was first broadcast in Australia in 1992 and has aired around the world on the Discovery channel.

He rode his image into a feature film, and developed the Australia Zoo as a tourist attraction.

Irwin had received some negative publicity in recent years. In January 2004, he stunned onlookers at his Australia Zoo reptile park by carrying his 1-year-old son into a crocodile pen during a wildlife show. He tucked the infant under one arm while tossing the 13-foot reptile a piece of meat with the other.

Authorities declined to charge Irwin for violating safety regulations.

Later that year, he was accused of getting too close to penguins, a seal and humpback whales in Antarctica while making a documentary. Irwin denied any wrongdoing, and an Australian Environment Department investigation recommended no action be taken against him.

I know, I was just saying that it was caught on tape. The camera man caught him pulling the barb out of his chest. I have not viewed the tape, just read it on yahoo news.

That would have to be a scary moment, knowing you're going to die. When I wrecked my RS I didn't have time to realize I could die. But when you do that for a living, you must understand the risks. Sad stuff.

The sad part is he might have been able to live through it if he had not taken the barb out of his chest. The guy caught 15' crocs with only a net a tiny boat and his own two hands. He was never bitten by a poisionous snake, even though he handled probably thousands of wild ones. I believe his manager or agent said a while back that if any animal was to ever get the best of Steve it would have to be in the water because nothing could touch him on land. I know I'm going to miss him.

CROCODILE HUNTER DEATH TO BE BROADCAST?

STEVE IRWIN LATEST: The footage of late Australian naturalist STEVE IRWIN being killed by a stingray could be shown on TV. Charismatic Irwin, dubbed the Crocodile Hunter after his internationally acclaimed TV show, died yesterday (04SEP06) while diving on Australia's Great Barrier Reef. Irwin was filming for a new documentary when he lost his life, and his cameraman shot the moment when the stingray's barbed tail stabbed the legendary conservationist through the heart. The tapes are currently being held by Queensland police - but Irwin's family are determined to respect his last wishes and allow the harrowing footage to be broadcast. Irwin once insisted, "My number one rule is to keep that camera rolling. Even if it's shaky or slightly out of focus, I don't give a rip. "Even if a big old alligator is chewing me up I want to go down and go, 'Crikey!' just before I die. That would be the ultimate for me." An insider tells British newspaper the Daily Star, "This is exactly what Steve would have wanted. He knew the dangers and was totally up for the cameras to get everything."

I just heard that the stingray that killed him, was buried under the sand, so no one saw it. So, its really nothing he did, no one saw it and when he swam over it, it got startled and stabbed him.

Where did you hear that at? The poison of the barb stopped his heart... I don't think leaving the poisonous thing in would have helped.

I've been stung in the foot by a small stingray, it is by far the most painful thing I have ever endured, and this was like a baby stingray.

yea i can under stand y that killed him, the hole the barb put in his heart, combined with the venom/bacteria. also when u pull those out it causes even more damage. i think he had so much adrenalin that he was alive just long enough to pull the barb out.
and they declined the state funeral because they think he is a regular guy and that he would want to be treated as such.

He didn't pull it out, the medics or whoever was helping him pulled it out. I guess they thought that would be better. I'm pretty sure he died instantly.

And I don't blame his family for deciding to go with a private funeral. Less press and people who didn't actually know him. May he rest in peace.

There is also less chance there will be a jerk off who is trying to ruin a moment and shout "Go Stingrays!" during a prayer or something.

With todays world I wouldn't doubt someone would do that.

You're absolutly right. I don't know about other places, but here in St. Louis, they had to actually enact a law prohibiting PROTESTS 1 hour before and 1 hour after funerals. Apparently, there have been people protesting about the war during soldier's funerals! HOW F-ing ridiculous is that? Makes you wonder what the world is coming to these days.

I can understand the sentiments of those who are saying that watching this man die is an aweful idea, mainly because of those who are gung-ho about it; you know, the guy that's like "I WANT TO SEE SOMEONE DIE! WHOA! HOLY CRAP THIS IS GONNA BE INTENSE!" However, I myself would like to see the video as well. Am I sick? I don't think so. I think there are so many of us out there that look at death as one of those topics that you only hear about through some media outlet or only experience through and instance of death in the family or of someone close to them. There are instances when someone might see someone die, but I'm not talking about those people. I'm talking about seeing this video and taking it in. Does that make any sense to anyone besides me? I certainly hope so...

yes, a lot of us would like to see the video out of curiousity, and there are some who want to watch it in a very sick way.

the video isn't shown as a mark of respect, in the same way when Micheal "Beef" Park (Markko Martin's co-driver) died in a crash in the WRC no footage of that crash was shown as a mark of respect.

I wasn't sure if the stingray's poision would be enough to kill him. If you get stabbed in the heart by anything, you take it out you are going to bleed to death. That's why I said might because if he left it in the poision might have killed him but if he pulled it out he was going to bleed to death.

i dont think the poison is bad enough to kill a human (was reading about it) but it will make them very sick and sometimes numb, so what i was thinking was maybe he bleed to death? im not sure if poison injected closer to your heart has more effect then the same amount of poison injected into an area further away like your foot though....
