1990 F150 ignition cylinder help

I have a 1990 F150 and last week I turned it off, but the darn thing kept running. I drove it home and disconnected the battery and got it to die after a few minutes.

I replaced the igniton cylinder and as soon as I put it in, everything had power, even though it was in the off position and I took the key out. With the key out, the radio was on, the windows worked, the wipers and blinkers worked.

When you go to start it, the accessories and run position are fine, but when you actually crank it to start, everything loses power and goes dead. When you return the cylinder to remove the key power returns to everything, even when the key is removed. Anybody ever deal with this, or any idea on what could be wrong.

It is a 1990 F150, with 125,000 miles, 4.9L, 2WD. It has a tilt wheel also, if that makes a difference.

Did you have the old ignition in the off position before you removed it? If it was not in the off position then the switches were on while the new ignition was in the off position.

The actual ignition switch is a few inches below the cylinder you replaced. There is a pot metal piece that connects the two. This pot metal piece is what has broken. It can be a bit trickey to replace this, but if you are used to doing repairs you can do it. I would suggest getting a Haynes manual for step by step instructions. PS: put a light coating of grease on this new pot metal piece or you may be replacing it again very soon. Ask me how I know this. Good luck.
