Power Window Stopped Working

The Drivers Side Window on my 96 GMC Jimmy all of the sudden stopped working, it gave not warning. I've read all the other threads but none of them helped. The problem is, it got stuck in the DOWN position and would not roll up. No noise came from the motor or the switch. I though It would be the swtich, but wasn't so sure. How can I know whether its the SWITCH or the MOTOR???

The other windows work fine, the fuse for the power locks is good, otherwise I think none of the wondows would work. I tried took out the switch (no easy task) and cleaned the contacts, but it did not help. I had to take the door panel off in order to puch up the window by hand, luckily it worked. But I am still trying to figure out how to determine whether its the SWTCH or MOTOR?? Please help!!

Mine just did that, 96 jimmy here too. The next morning I went out to the truck and It worked. This truck is full of suprises. I think mine got jammed from my daughter trying to hold the button while it was on window lock. Try in about 24 hrs

Best troubleshooting might be to open up the door and see if you have 12Volts at the motor, if you do then the switch is OK. The motors have an over temperature self reseting circuit breaker built into them. After time the grease gets thick and the motor has to work against that and lifting the window. If this happens the circuit breaker will trip due to too much current becaused of the jammed motor. Let it cool and it will reset(for now), but it's on its way out, better have one on hand and change it before winter.
Look at Rockauto.com they have a pretty good range of parts for most cars.

Thank you all for your advice. I found out it was the motor by sending a direct power to it. It was actually preatty easy to replace the motor.

I am trying to replace the motor in my 1995 GMC Jimmy. When I take the door panel off the motor is attached with waht appears to be pop-rivets. What is the best way to detach then reattach the new motor.

Easiest way would be to drill out the existing ones and then just pop rivet the new one in place. You can also use a regular bolt/lock washer/nut of the same size. If you use a bolt, make sure they aren't too long to cause interference with moving parts. Hope this helps!

Thanks I may try to do that.
