95 transmission removal

My transmission in my 95 lumina needs to be rebuilt. The Chiltons manual says to remove the transmission, the engine must also be removed. Has anyone removed a 4T60E without dropping both the engine and trans?

Welcome to AF. The engine must be supported with a tower to tower engine support, the subframe has to be removed and all the attached components, tough job without a trans jack and lift. Engine stays in car.

Thanks. After looking at it one more time, I can see there's no way to get the trans out the bottom without removing the subframe. Not something that I want to do. I think I might be more willing to take the engine and trans out through the top if that's an option. I hate to say it, but I think it's time for this car to go. I really hate to get rid of a car with a body in such good shape, but if I put $1500 into a trans, that's all the car is going to be worth when I get done.

Have you owned this car for a while and know it's history? Could you buy another car as nice for $1500? Do you like the car? If you answered yes, no, yes, then put a trans in and drive it. Remember, another used car's trans could go out, sticking you with the same $1500 repair bill, plus the expense of the purchase price. If the car runs good, you like driving it, and is in good shape, it's worth fixing. A new trans will not add much to the resale value, but you'll get almost nothing for it if you attempt to sell it with a bad trans.
