Steve Irwin killed in stingray attack

By 7News Crocodile Hunter Steve Irwin has been killed in a stingray attack near Cairns on Australia's far north coast. It was believed Irwin had been swimming off the coast of Cairns when he was stung.
"It is understood he was killed by a sting-ray barb that went through his chest," Brisbane's Courier Mail reported this afternoon.
Irwin was best known for his documentary series "The Crocodile Hunter".
He was born in Victoria and found his love of animals after following in his father's footsteps, volunteering his services to the Queensland Government's East Coast Crocodile Management program.
He spent years living on his own in the mosquito infested creeks, rivers and mangroves of North Queensland, catching huge crocodiles single-handed.
In June 1992, he married American Terri Raines after they met when she visited Irwin's Australia Zoo.
The 44-year-old is survived by his wife and two children, Bindi and Robert.

He was a fairly embarrassing ambassador for Australia, but a death at 44 years of age can only be called tragic.

He was the epitomy of the typical Australian and brought a sense of stereotypical identity to this country. He turned Australian zoo's and specifically Australian wildlife into an International Icon.

what? it can't be!

that dude was awesome, i loved watching his progams wherever they were on, it was great watching him first thing in the morning when eating breakfast.

he was so enthusiastic and passionate about everything he did, and he was fascinating.

it's a shame, he was a great guy.

that's too bad. He really was an expert at what he did, and such a charismatic man, too. I remember when he got so much shit for putting his baby near a croc's mouth, but you know, by doing that, i think that baby will become just a character as his dad Steve was.

RIP, Steve did so much to help the world in his own way.

He's cheated death numerous times before. One news report said he was filming a new documentary at the time he was killed. The sad part is he leaves behind 2 young kids, one of them a baby. He won't get the chance to see them grow up. My favorite scene of him was the one where he was mowing the lawn near a body of water with a lawnmower, and a crocodile suddenly came out of the water and attacked the lawnmower, dragging it back into the water, much to Steve's surprise.

Like others have said and I myself have dozens of times...it was bound to happen sooner or later the way that guy thought he would go play with everything. Once I heard the news I already had it played out in my head how it all went down.

"Crikey!!! Look at the size of that stingray...aint she a beut....I think IM gonna jump in and pet it....CRIKEY!!! It stabbed me in the chest"

They say the video shows everything. Apparently he didn't antagonise the ray at all. They figure because he was above it and the cameraman was in front of it, it felt threatened and boxed in, so it automatically flicked up its tail as a reflex. Pierced his heart, he pulled out the barb then died.

Sad :(

Stainton described the footage, which he had seen, as "shocking."
"It shows that Steve came over the top of the ray and the tail came up, and spiked him here (in the chest), and he pulled it out and the next minute he's gone," Stainton told reporters in Cairns, where Irwin's body was taken for an autopsy.
"That was it. The cameraman had to shut down," Stainton said.

The holocaust and 9-11 were tragedies. This man made a living out of putting himself in harms way. The two aren't even comparable and you're a moron for even attempting to compare the deaths and suffering of millions of innocents with the (somewhat expected) death of one man, and nothing more than a TV personality at that.

Ralliart 3000gt
09-05-2006, 10:51 PM
No it wasn't expected that such a man get killed buy somthing very few world wide have died from, and the point that I'm puting across is that its not right or funny to make fun of another person or peoples deaths, you see it as putting ones self in harms way, others see it as promoting and apreciating the life of the creatures we share this world with..................... Its obviouse that he was a good man, there is no need for BS jokes..........

This was only the third known Australian fatality from a stingray, and the first since 1945.[41] (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Steve_Irwin#_note-28) As of 1996, only seventeen worldwide fatalities had been recorded,[42] (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Steve_Irwin#_note-29) and it is believed to be the only fatality from a stingray ever captured on film.

yeah...this has nothing to do with taking the internet too seriously. that would mean that you believe this story when it's actually fake and any random shit that shows up. just defining that for ya since ya got it mixed up a bit.

seriously, we know he did something stupid that caused his death, but it doesnt mean you need to start joking the guy. if anyone said this about andy, how would the forum react. think of it that way and then respond this. i know a lot of people on here are immature, but it shouldnt be that way all the time and especially not for someone's death. that goes for the mods as well. although this is no democracy but a straight out "my rules my way" forum, try being a human at least and not an asshole.

EDIT: Just finished THE INSIDER. i think they're going to show the vid tomorrow and other vids of stingray attacks. not sure, but they are showing something and some of his last shoot, whether it's of the stingray or the stuff before.

they're waiting to release it, letting terri grieve and think it over. they reported saying they want her there when it is released but to be ready to do such a thing. im sure watching your husband die is one thing, but to then release to the press, who knows? maybe she hasnt watched it yet. not something youd immediately want to see really.

that's what ive been reading.

I agree, whether it is the internet, television, or even real life, I don't think it something that is to be made into a joke. Just because it is a different form of communication does not make it any more or less significant in accordance to the death of another.
